Description:
MacDonald, George. AT THE BACK OF THE NORTH WIND. New York: George Routledge, 1871. First American edition (the English sheets with a cancel title-page). Original blue pictorial cloth, gilt. Illustrated by Arthur Hughes. Spine and corners worn, split in rear joint expertly closed, but a good copy of a book nearly impossible to find in the English first edition, and seldom found with the original binding intact in the American issue. A respectable copy of this classic children's fantasy that defies classification. It is clearly a religious parable, but not overly didactic. The author's first novel for children and one of the…

Original color pictorial wrappers. Neatly rebacked, mild rubbing, some coloring in a few places, but a very good copy, and a miracle of survival. OCLC locates only a single copy of this work. McManus (1884-1954) began his career with the `New York World' in 1905, where `Newlyweds and Their Baby' first appeared, and he is best remembered for his comic strip, BRINGING UP FATHER, the first American comic strip to achieve international fame. Melville, Herman. REDBURN: HIS FIRST VOYAGE. New York: Harper, 1849. Spine ends much worn, gilt dull; a good solid copy. There was but a single printing of 4,508 copies; by the time of the 1853 Harper fire, 2,433 copies had been bound in cloth and 1,955 in wrappers; the 120 copies still in sheets were destroyed in the fire, as well as 176 unsold bound copies. The copyright deposit copy was also a second state copy. BAL 13660.

Description:
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Voigt Milling Company. MARK TWAIN FLOUR. Grand Rapids, Michigan [ca. 1900] Broadside flyer, 11 x 7 inches, heavily illustrated in bright colors. One of the most attractive and blatant examples of the exploitation of his Mark Twain's name and image known. One side of this advertising sheet, addressed to a grocer (but never folded or mailed), displays five sacks of flour and two views of bountiful wheat fields. Intended to be folded down twice, the other side contains a view of the factory, an address panel, and a descriptive text under the heading, `ABOUT MARK…

Description:
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Voigt Milling Company. MARK TWAIN FLOUR. Grand Rapids, Michigan, ca. 1900. Original paper flour sack, 25 lb. size, printed in bright colors with large portrait of Twain. Very fine unused example; this larger size is quite rare (most surviving sacks are the 5 lb. size). An unusual and very attractive example of the exploitation of his name and image. This company was formed as a partnership in 1898, began milling Mark Twain Flour by 1900, and continued selling it under that name until 1951; the company closed in 1955. The brochure that advertised this style of bag describes this flour as a "recent…
