Description:
Various, 1864. Various. Very good. This group of eight documents and letters is associated with Major Pleasant W. White, the Confederacy's Chief Commissary for Florida, and Captain James McKay, of the Fifth Confederate Commissary District. A good case could be made that they were the two most important officers in the Confederacy as it was their effort providing the food, especially beef, that kept the Confederate Army in the field. The archive contains: 3 August 1863 - Special Order from the Secretary of War's Office in Richmond directing Captain Bryant to "report to Major P. W. White Chief Commissary State of Florida for assignment to duty." 27 October 1863 - Letter from the Assistant Quartermaster General's Office in Richmond to White , a native of Quincy, authorizing him, as well his officers and agents, to receive a "'tax in kind' in east and south Florida." The letter is docketed and endorsed by "P. W. White." 30 October 1863 - Special Orders No. 258 from the Adjutant and Inspector…

U.S.S. Independence at New York, 1843. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This three-page stampless folded letter, measuring 16.5" x 9.5", is datelined "U. S. Ship Independence / New York, Nov. 21st. 1843." It bears a manuscript "12½" rate mark (the cost to send a letter from 80 to 150 miles) and a circular red New York postmark dated November 13. In nice shape; small hole from opening the seal. A transcript will be provided. When Greene wrote this letter, the U.S.S. Independence had just become the Flagship of the U.S. Home Fleet. As Greene awaited the ship's departure from New York, he penned this humorous, gossipy, and cattily racist letter to his wife, Catharine, in Philadelphia, who was recovering from a fairly serious illness. Excerpts include" "I . . . suppose that [your] fever, chill, &c, arose from inflammation of the face. . .. I am proud that my letter, or whatever it may be called, has affected a cure; it must indeed be from the quantity, and not from its quality. . .. I was under a…

This affidavit and letter of transmittal were sent to Theodore Winters of Washoe Valley, Nevada by an attorney, Thomas J. Tennant, in 1890 to verify
"Charles D. Moore's Piute Indian War Claim" that was spurred by an attached newspaper clipping that announced the Nevada Secretary of State was convening a board on the 23rd of April offering individuals a chance (perhaps their last) of "proving up Piute Indian War and Indian Depredation Claims."The transmittal letter, dated April 21, 1890, reads in part: "Inclosed find Affidavit relative to Charles M.
