Description:
Paris: E.P.A. Hachette, 2005. First Edition thus (French edition). A retrospective of Helmut Newton's work, showing his theatrical / cinematic approach to portraiture. The book and dust wrapper are both almost as new, with just a fractional handling. No significant marks or wear. Perhaps our imagination, but the dust wrapper and matching boards seem to have a much darker, golden tone than the US edition. Although the introduction and other text is in French - this hardly matters, as this book is all about the photography. Contents include Motels - Spring summer fashion - Kinski revealed - Living dolls - Prussian guard - At your service - The angels - Young and old - The Newton girls - Living and dining - 10 questions - Loving ladies - Playmates by Helmut Newton - Desires of tomorrow - To your beauty - Newton Physics - Afterword. 176 pages. 310 by 240mm (12¼ by 9½ inches). . Paris: Librairie Delagrave, 1881. A attractive copy of this first edition work of political caricature. 32 full page illustrated plates (including the title) 8 of them in colour. There is a further colour plate tipped onto the front board. The boards are clean, with a little darkening / foxing to the plate. Some rubbing with surface loss to the rear panel. Internally mostly clean and tidy. The title page has some darkening / dirt, and there are a few light foxing spots, but overall in very good condition. The end papers and paste downs are possibly renewed, so some restoration may have occurred. If so, this was some time ago, as a small old gilt bookseller's label is on the end paper. 32pp. 260 by 390mm (10¼ by 15¼ inches). A parody of someone who wants to be more than he is - and taking France as wanting to be more English that England. Description:
Versaille, 1900. A fascinating sketchbook and four drawings by the artist and portraitist Henri de Nolhac (1884-1948). He was the son of Pierre de Nolhac, the curator of the Palace of Versailles Museum during his youth. From a young age, he was a painter, and particularly skilled in pencil portraits, which he used to make his living. The four portraits, each on stiff card are approximately 34 x 22 cm. Three of the four are signed by Nolhac. Two are gentlemen, (Raymond Laurent* and another anonymous man). Two are portraits of anonymous young women. Each are skillfully executed and in excellent condition. The sketchbook, with a cloth spine and plain blue boards, seems to have begun life as an itinerary book / plan for his father. A note on the front end paper "2e Division 1er Brigade" and to the final page "Cours special d'instruction 3e Brigade (1890-91)" is followed by seven pages in ink, dated 1890-1891 in an adult hand. This seems to be largely assigning projects (or elements of the instruction…
