Description:
London: Collins, 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. The tenth Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin novel, set during the War of 1812. O'Brian's series of meticulously detailed nautical novels set during the early 19th century set a high bar for historical fiction. This novel provides the plot to the film Master and Commander, starring Russell Crowe. The middle novels of the 21-book series are some of the scarcest first editions in the series. This book is particularly tough as the publisher changed the price (or misprinted it) on the dust jacket and issued most copies with a clipped jacket and a price sticker. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with only the slightest fading to the spine. This jacket is not price-clipped, but it has the price sticker, making it an uncommon intermediate state. It is entirely likely that many of the copies currently offered for sale with the original £8.95 unclipped price and no sticker have simply had the…

Description:
1968. Ephemera. Very good. An extremely rare, one-of-a-kind hand-painted poster promoting the appearance of the band Spirit and Jimmie Spheeris at the legendary Golden Bear club in Huntington Beach, California, from August 13-19, [1968]. The Golden Bear did not issue many posters, particularly in the 1960s, and based on this rare survivor, they may have relied on handmade posters to promote upcoming acts at the venue. This pen-and-ink and gouache painting is on cardstock cut out to follow the edges of the drug-inspired psychedelic image. This poster incorporates images of opium poppies, mushrooms, and marijuana leaves with a plume of smoke extending up the center of the poster. A gnome or wizard looks down benevolently from the top and a strange, large-eyed creature peers around both edges. Bill Ogden designed several psychedelic posters for Southern California businesses in the early 1970s, made classic ads for the swimwear company Jantzen, and defined the surf-art aesthetic of the 1970s.…

Description:
1972. Ephemera. Near fine. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Bill Ogden, a Southern California painter, defined the surf art look of the era. Some of his most visible work was done for the Portland, Oregon, swimwear company, Jantzen, which held the back cover ad space in Surfer Magazine for a number of years. This is the original artwork (mixed media with gouache and possibly silkscreen and/or airbrush) done for the September 1972 ad, which promoted Jantzen's Fire & Rain line of swimsuits and beachwear. The ads always combined Ogden's artwork with photographs. In this painting, the blond surfer's shirt is painted plain tan, with the intention of having Jantzen's graphic designers superimpose an actual shirt design, which they did. In the final ad, they also added a photograph of a man surfing a tube to the background, where Ogden had painted a starry night. True to Ogden's artistry and rather unusual for this kind of illustration art, the entire piece works as an image. Unless you have the Surfer…
