Description:
London: William Harrison Ainsworth..., 1828. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 184 x 106 mms., pp. '[iv], 94, uncut, original red boards; boards worn, spine defective, front cover detached. The author and journalist Samuel Laman Blanchard (1803 - 1845) had an inauspicious start to life, being unable to complete his university education when his father's finances deteriorated. After a few desultory excursions into literature and journalism, he decided to become an actor, but working in the provinces cured him of that and, penniless, he walked back to London. This, his first book, is dedicated to Charles Lamb. Thackeray described his appearance as being that of a mixture of Voltaire and Mendelsohn. A longish review in The Athanaeum concluded, "Mr Blanchard must expect to be very severely handled by the critics of one school for his 'Lyrical Offerings,'and to be richly bedaubed by those of another. We have warned him, in the former part of our article, against both these…

A Paris, Chez Saintin, Libraire..., 1813. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. Small, rectangular 8vo, 120 x 88, pp. [iv], 107 [108 blank], xcv [xcvi blank]; [iv], 106 [107 - 108 Table], xciv, engraved frontispiece in volumes and 31 other attractive and interesting engraved plates contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt spines. A very good set. These two volumes, with quite a bit of emphasis on the Aborigines of Australia, have very good engravings, but how much of a contribution to ethnography they make is difficult to assess. All of the plates seem to derive from a great variety of previous images, and one has probably to be slightly sceptical about their authenticity. For example, California is represented by a plate that seems more appropriate to a location in South America.

Venetiis, Aldus Manutius Paulli, 1567. Small 8vo, 146 x 93 mms., foliated, [8], 189, [19] leaves, with Aldine device on title-page and verso of last leaf, with colophon on recto, with two small ink annotations on title-page, 18th century speckled calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, morocco label; very slight worming to margin of last few leaves, one leaf torn at corner with loss of paper but not text, free end-papers removed, worming to top and bottom compartments (out of six), resulting in a fretwork effect, also very slight worming to boards. These works on Cataline's or the conspiracy of Cataline and the Jugurthine War are among the earliest histories from the Roman historians to survive. Many pithy comments on humanity emerged from his histories, e. g. "Sed multi mortales dediti ventri atque somno, indocti incultique vitam sicuti peregrinantes transiere," translated by Wikipedia as "Yet many human beings, resigned to sensuality and indolence, un-instructed and…

Aere: EXandebant J. & P. Wilson, 1808. 12mo (in 6s), 140 x 84 mms., pp,.[3] 4 - 124, attractive bound in contemporary lightly mottled calf, gilt border and gilt coat of arms on each cover, gilt spine; base of spine and gilt ornament on rear cover wormed. This is a very rare Scottish book printed by the firm responsible for the printing of the famous Kilmarnock edition of Burns of 1796. The printers are the brothers John and Peter Wilson of Ayr, pioneering figures of the book trade in Ayrshire, on whom see Carreen S. Gardner, Printed in Ayr and Kilmarnock: Newspapers, Periodicals, Books and Pamphlets Printed from about 1780 until 1920 (1976), p. 11. Gardner notes, about John Wilson, that "[u]ndoubtedly the most famous work printed by Wilson in Kilmarnock was the first edition of the poems of Robert Burns in July 1786" (ibid.). For this 1808 Ayr edition of Sallust, see Gardner, p. 77. The coat of arms in gilt on this copy are those of Edinburgh. The motto in the scroll,…

Parisiis. Ex officina Rob. Stephani typographia Regis. 1544. 8vo, 164 100 mms., pp. 208 [209 - 239 Index, 240 blank], printer's ornament on title-page, contemporary calf ruled in blind on covers, with central gilt ornament and gilt fleurs de lys at corners of blind rectangle; leaf before title-page defective, several leaves sprung, corners and top of spine a bit worn, but a good copy. "A vigorous account of the notorious conspiracy of Catiline in 63 B.C. to overthrow the civil power in Rome, Sallust's Catiline is one of the best histories in Latin literature. The narrative is vivid and consistent, and the sketches of character are admirable in their power and conciseness. Although the author obviously hated the democratic party with which Catiline was connected, and had no great admiration for Cato or Cicero, his work is wonderfully impartial. Sallust's conception of history, indeed, as is exemplified also in his Jugurthine War, was very modern. He attempts to bring before his…

A Zuric chez l'Auteur, 1777. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. Large 4to, 257 x 195 mms., pp. [xvi], 184; [3], 4 - 190, engraved title-page in each volume, separate engraved title-page in volume 1 for Contes Moraux, list of subscribers in volume 1, 10 full-page engraved plates in each volume, engraved head- and tail-pieces (39 in all) for each tale or section, early 19th century half calf, spotted boards (a little worn). A fine set, with very fresh impressions of the (often erotic) plates. The Swiss painter Salomon Gessner (1730-1788) began life as an apprentice to a bookseller in Berlin, seeming to follow in the footsteps of his father, a bookseller, printer, and publisher. This is certainly one of the most attractive editions of Gessner's works, even in a French translation. Gessner was responsible for choosing the illustrations, and the erotic overtones of many of the engravings perhaps enjoyed a more robust reception in this French translation. Copac locates a copy at the NLS in these…

FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [iv], ix [x Advertisement], [ii], 228, [ii], 304 [305 - 307 Contents, 308 Errata], 39 [40 blank], recently rebound in quarter calf, raised bands between gilt rules, morocco label, marbled boards; ex-library, with perforations in title-page, library stamp across lower edge, small corner torn from top corner of title-page, several leaves closely trimmed, with occasional loss of page number at top of page. A copy of this work was in Adam Smith's library (Mizuta 111), but he makes no specific reference to it in The Wealth of Nations. It is an impressive collection of data, and he pays tribute in the Preface to the work of his predecessors, Henry Saxby (The British Customs, 1759; Mizuta 1492) and Henry Crouch (A Complete View of the British Customs, 1738; Mizuta 440a). He is becomingly modest about the quality of his work, acknowledging only its quantity: "the Editor has gone through a laborious and difficult Task; in its…

THe poet and school teacher Samuel Bishop (1731 - 1795) wrote a number of poems but published very few in his lifetime. A fine quarto edition was published in 1796 after his death, edited and produced by Thomas Clare, who married Bishop's widow. His domestic poems breathe a Dutch spiritby which I mean a very amiable and happy feeling of domestic duties and enjoyments." The Monthly Magazine in 1796 announced the subscription volume of 1796: "Proposals have been circulated, soliciting subscribers for the…

Small 8vo (in 4s), 160 x 92 mms., pp. [iv], 184, contemporary lightly mottled calf, spine richly gilt (but rubbed), red morocco label; slight wear to joints, but a very good copy. The first edition of 1785, of which I have not been able to find a copy, attracted a review in The London Review, beginning, "This little publication does more honour to the authors' heart than head. His sentiments in general are just, and his motives for communicting them laudable; but the dress in which he has cloathed them, is aukward and ill chosen. His observations on religion are trite, and only a repetition of what has frequently been said by others in a much more pleasing manner." Samuel Birch (17571841) began his life as a pastry cook, but later, in 1814, was Lord Mayor of London, ESTC T45406 locates copies of this second edition in BL, Bodleian, and Leeds only, but OCLC lists other copies, many of which seem to be online only.…

Description:
. A manuscript volume of 35 leaves, the pages numbered 1 to 70, being a contemporary manuscript of the second part of Colville's popular seventeenth-century poem. The leaves measure 192 x 142 mms., with one blank leaf preceding the numbered leaves, which have manuscript text on both recto and verso. The hand is clear and legible, and the text has been bound in contemporary sheepskin, with gilt panels on both covers and gilt thistles within the panels, plus gilt thistles, projecting diagonally, at each of the eight corners of the two gilt panels on the front and back covers. The binding is in poor condition and has been crudely rebacked at some stage, with the latter part of the volume being difficult to open without cracking at the inner margin (gutter). A shelf mark, "B2.76," appears on the front paste-down endpaper, and loosely inserted is a folded, undated note in a 20th century hand citing several late seventeenth-century printed editions of Colville's poetry. A verse…

Description:
[?Philadelphia] [c.1800]. These embroideries are possibly the work of Samuel Folwell (1764 - 1813), the American miniaturist, silhouettist, engraver, and hair worker. In any case, they are very much in the style of needlework and embroideries produced by Folwell and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Gebler Folwell. In the first embroidery, Emma sits contentedly under a tree holding a garland of flowers, with a basket of flowers at her feet. She wears a long flowing white gown, and her long curly hair (very much in the style of the 1790s) is decked out with flowers. In the background is a road and gate leading to a farm house. The second picture is a fine example of the iconography of mourning so popular in America after the death of George Washington in 1799. In this one, a forlorn woman sits under a tree in front of a tombstone which reads "In Memory of Emma Corbett." There are withered and dead leaves around her and in the background is a house with a thatched roof. Both textiles have some…

A fine copy. Garth published The Dispensary in 1699, and as the website for The Royal College of Physicians notes, " his satirical poem in six cantos, mocking some of the key protagonists in the dispute. The poem begins with a description of the newly constructed college building on Warwick Lane, with its striking 'Dome, Majestick to the Sight

He is awakened from his slumbers by the sound of the construction of the dispensary, so sends his servant Phantom to summon the Goddess Envy.
