First Edition, 8vo, red cloth, 250 pp., moderate shelf wear, rubbing along joints, small pinhole on front joint, lower corner of page edges has coffee-like stain about 1/2" each of front and bottom edges; about 20 pp. have similar type stains in margins, the largest measuring about the size of a dime and diminishing in size and fading outward from the source for about 10 pp. on either side of it. Author's first novel. This is a respectable copy in spite of its faults. The front flyleaf is signed "Ina A. Bubna / Carbisdale 1920." Bubna was the daughter of Duchess Blair who constructed Carbisdale Castle, reputedly out of spite of her second husband's family. Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1814. Second Edition . 3/4 Calf/Marbled Boards. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Second Edition of the first of The Waverley Novels published five weeks after the first edition with minor revisions and one new paragraph (volume II, p. 294), three volumes, calf spine and tips with marbled boards, engraved bookplates on front pastedowns of all three volumes, half-titles present in all three volumes; volume 3 has 1.5 inch split on front joint. This is an extra-illustrated (Grangerized) edition containing 17 engravings of portraits and views, minor wear. Tipped-in volume I is a facsimile of a holograph letter from Sir Walter Scott to bookseller Charles Tilt thanking him for his present of illustrations for Waverley. The original of this letter identified Scott as the author of Waverley, which was published anonymously.

Bound in glossy illustrated boards, the book is in very good condition with minor soiling/wear/wrinkling on a few pages (see images). Dust jacket has some minor soiling and edge wrinkling; bottom of dust jacket spine has about 1/8" missing (no text loss); dust jacket preserved in protective Mylar cover.

This is a Review Copy and unnumbered from an edition of 950 numbered copies; bound in brown cloth with gilt-stamped birds and lettering, contains 83 b&w photographs of birds and water fowl in action, dust jacket is somewhat darkened and chipped at the top of spine (about 1" x 1") and along the edges; signed in pencil on fron panel of dust jacket by Gordon Aymar, an illustrator and member of the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame; he made a notation on the inside front panel of the dust jacket of two camera settings though their importance is not apparent.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1874. Reprint . Blue Cloth. Good Plus/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Contains 364 pp., top and bottom of spine worn, 1.5" split to upper front joint. This was a very popular title by Soyer who in the 1850s helped Florence Nightingale transform the health of the British and French troops in the Crimean War.

Contains 581 pp., frontispiece plus 18 plates in rear, front joint split but not broken, top and bottom of spine have some chipping, red ink stamp on title indicates this had been in the library of the Steevens Hospital (Dublin?) - no other library indications. Front pastedown has old bookseller's engraved label - Grant Bolton & Co., 4 Dame Street, Dublin. Pages are bright and nearly free of foxing.

Boston: Henry Tolman and Co., 1860. No Edition Stated . Blindstamped Brown Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Contains 72 pp., songs from . Light foxing throughout, top and bottom of spine worn to the height of the pages, 2" close split at rear joint, some fading to cover. Overall, this is quite a respectable copy.

Doran monogram under the copyright line, 168 pp., 6 color illustrations (some offsetting to adjoining pages), numerous b&w illustrations, front hinge cracked, a nice copy in a reasonably respectable dust jacket - top and bottom of spine of dj missing about 1/4", chipped along edges, lower rear panel has chip about 1" x 2"; dust jacket is protected in a mylar cover.
