Description:
Prague, 1618. Engraving on hand made laid paper, 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches (210 x 148 mm), thread margins. An approximately 1-inch vertical repaired tear extends into the image area at the top center sheet edge. Adhered to archival paper at the center of the top sheet edge, and at the top and bottom left corners, with an associated dog-eared lower left corner. Condition issues are consistent with age. A superb impression with rich, dark inking and all of the fine lines printing clearly. An impression of this work may be viewed in the permanent collection of the British Museum, registration no. O,2.54. [Hollstein 291]. In the upper left corner of the portriat is a fancy heraldic coat of arms with two feathered talons and a Burgonet helmet, on the right is an ovoid tableau with the sun and moon shining above a group of soldiers, bearing the enigmatic latin phrase "Non mihi verum alies" (I do not know the truth of others). The inscription in Latin above and below the portrait reads: "V. Illvst. Marqvardvs…

1870. Watercolor and gouache on cream wove paper, 17 3/4 x 13 7/8 inches (450 x 340 mm). Signed and titled in watercolor in the lower right image area. Small circular pea-sized damp stain in the top center image area (visible in the area of the sky), and some additional small spots of unobtrusive foxing in the upper left sheet area. Otherwise in very good condition with fresh colors and intricate brushwork. Schäfer's work is often conflated with that of British artist Henry Thomas Schafer, who was active in the same regions at the same time. In addition, both artists are considered to belong to the School of Samuel Prout. Biographical distinctions may be found in Christopher Wood's 1971 reference, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters, published by the Antique Collectors Club, London. One observation that can be made in…
