Description:
Chicago: Union Book Company Book. VG. Soft cover. 1901, pp47-55, illustrated with a vintage photograph of the Bank of England, with numerous people and carriages. Removed from WITH THE WORLD'S GREAT TRAVELLERS, Edited by Charles Morris and Oliver H.G. Leigh. May include a first or last copied page. VG. From the introduction: "Taine's ENGLISH LITERATURE, has in itself added a new work to the world's best literature of far more value than many of those with which it deals. In his, NOTES ON ENGLAND, he gives us thoughtful impressions of the country itself, from which we select his pen-picture of the great city on the Thames. The picture is not an inspiring one. He could not avoid comparing in his mind this fog-haunted capital with the brighter aspect of his native Paris.".
