Description:
Cambridge: typis Johan. Hayes, 1694/5 First edition of this collection of poems by Cambridge men in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, and English, lamenting the death of Queen Mary. Includes a 94-line elegy by Ambrose Philips, then an undergraduate at St. John's College. This was his first appearance in print. He went on to a successful career as a poet, dramatist, translator and journalist. He came to be mockingly called "Namby Pamby" as a result of his trochaics for children, but Johnson admired his juvenile poems and said that he was "eminent for bravery and skill with the sword. Contemporary marbled boards with recent sprinkled calf spine, gilt olive morocco label. . Small octavo. A very good copy.

Description:
Graz- Austria: Akademische Druck u. Verlagsanstalt, 1971 Two volumes, consisting of a manuscript facsimile, printed in color and in gold and silver, and a text volume with black and white photographic reproductions. Both volumes are quartos, with the facsimile volume being [16] pp and the text volume being 28 pp. Text volume bound in printed white paper wrappers. Facsimile volume printed on simulated vellum. . A fine set in a very good leather clamshell case lettered and stamped decoratively in gilt, slightly toned at the edges and spine and lightly worn. The facsimile of the Codex Vindobonensis 958 reproduces the ninth century Carolingian manuscript (named for the period of Emperor Charlemagne's reign), which is thought to have been created in the Abbey of Saint-Amand in the north of France. While a Sacramentary is the book for a priest celebrant, containing all and only the words spoken by him, the present work is considered a "Sacramentary fragment," as some of the portions are missing. Description:
London: Printed for G. Hawkins, 1746 Contemporary calf, professionally rebacked, with contemporary gilt backstrip laid down. . Octavo. Gilt-ruled covers, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Armorial bookplate, and ink inscription by the same owner, dated 1836. An interesting study of Shakespeare language, grammar, and versification, with particular attention to the relationship between the plays and the literature of Greece and Rome. Upton was trained at Oxford in the scholarly tradition of Richard Bentley (though he regards Bentley himself as somewhat devious in his methods). When this book was published Upton was Prebendary of Rochester; he later produced an edition of Spenser's Faerie Queene, and a critical work on Ben Jonson (though this is sometimes ascribed to his father James Upton).
