Description:
London: The Daily Mirror, 1935. Folio (12" X 15"). 32pp. Illustrations. Good plus. Mild even age toning throughout. Attractive full issue of this popular daily tabloid newspaper, founded in 1903. Headline reads, "THE KING GIVES THANKS," subtitled "In Unity with All His People," the bulk of the front page consisting of a photograph of the king and queen kneeling on on benches in front of their thrones at their silver jubilee thanksgiving service. The following year, King George V died. A sharp example.

Description:
New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1872. Steel engraving. 4to (12½" X 9¼"). Near fine. Faint age toning at edges. Wonderfully bright and sharp heavy stock steel engraving from the first edition (1872-74) of editor William Cullen Bryant's landmark "Picturesque America; Or, The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes, Waterfalls, Shores, Canyons, Valleys, Cities, and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country," a hefty two-volume study of America's scenery in words and fine steel engraving considered highly influential to American tourism. In this depiction of the glacial valley in the western Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California, the smooth-as-glass lake features a hunter in the right foreground lying prone in the front of a canoe, having just fired his rifle at a deer swimming ahead of him at center foreground; a sandbar and island appear at dead center, and behind that the heavily-forested lake's edge, with majestic mountains rising in the distance; the…

Description:
[Washington, DC]: J. & G.S. Gideon, n.y.. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Lightly age toned; binding traces at margin; contemporary "39" in brown ink at upper right corner of first page. An attractive and clean-edged first edition of this attack on the Democratic eighth U.S. president, undated but certainly published in 1848. After losing his bid for reelection to Whig candidate William Henry Harrison in 1840, Van Buren's opposition to Texas annexation in 1844 lost him the vote of pro-slavery Democrats and he failed to get the nomination, and in 1848 the Free Soil Party gave him the nomination. Though his views had become more anti-slavery over the years, this no-holds-barred criticism calls him "the great nucleus of the South, and the greatest enemy of the free institutions of the North" -- among many less tactful labels. Quite a few of his letters are excerpted to show his support of slavery. This pro-Whig piece then warns supporters against being tempted to support Van Buren and…
