Description:
London: Macmillan, 1888 First edition. Original green cloth, blocked in black and gilt. Two volumes, octavo. Corners lightly bumped, minor dustsoiling. Hinges of Volume II starting, but entirely sound. A very good copy. One of the later novels of the popular women's writer, Charlotte Yonge (1823-1901), who published nearly 160 books. Yonge, who herself was raised according to the system advocated by Maria Edgeworth and her father, was the child of a man who believed at once in higher education for women and female subservience to men. Not surprisingly, her work has not been embraced by modern readers. Still, her novels are important for their rounded views of women, and their insistence on the importance of the education and intellectual nurture of women. While few of her books are rare, they are difficult to find in fine condition.

Description:
London: John W. Parker and Son, 1860 Original reddish-brown blindstamped cloth, gilt spine. . Two volumes, small octavo. . Spines a bit cocked and darkened, binding extremities lightly rubbed, top edge of the last text leaf of Volume II closely cropped, later endpapers, a little light foxing. Overall a good, clean copy, scarce in original cloth. First edition of one of one of Charlotte Yonge's (1823-1901) more important novels. The heroine, Honora Charlecote, confronts the strain and the benefits of being a self-reliant woman. This novel is one of a series, beginning with The Heir of Reclyffe (1853), and proceeding through Heartsease (1854), The Daisy Chain (1856), Dynevor Terrace (1857), and The Young Stepmother (1861), which deal with complex women and men in difficult personal and social situations, in a realistic setting. Though Yonge's beliefs in devotion to duty and sacrifice of personal interests to family have alienated modern readers, these novels are important for their rounded views of…

Description:
A Paris, & se trouve à Basle, chez Jean schwieghauser, 1770 Rare early edition of Pierre le Tourneur's translation of Young's Night Thoughts. Not in RLIN, OCLC or NUC. Mentioned (but not listed) in Forter's bibliography of foreign translations of Young (Book Collector 1971, pp. 47-67), though he later appears to have acquired a copy, as there is now one at the Bodleian Library in the Forster collection. Contemporary polished calf, gilt calf spine labels, batik endpapers, all edges gilt. . Two volumes in one, twelvemo, in eights and fours. Slight damage with old repair (affecting a small area of text) on Vol. I, pp. 63-4. Several ink numerals in preliminaries. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Pierre le Tourneur's translation of Night Thoughts first appeared in 1769. This edition follows the Paris edition of 1770, and shows how widespread the demand for Young's poetry could be.

London: Printed for the Author, by Fry and Couchman, 1788 First edition, inscribed on the title page by Young: "Saml. Mather's 1788 / from the author. Recently rebound in period style tree calf by Philip Dusel with red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Octavo. Two engraved plates. Slight foxing, plates more extensively foxed. Endpapers and edges of last few leaves slightly toned. Contemporary ink inscription on title-page. A very good, clean copy. Little is known about Robert Young, including his dates, except that he was a social reformer and founder of the Philanthropic Society in 1788. The present work is one of two treatises that Young wrote on Newtonian philosophy, including An Examination of the Third and Fourth Definitions of the First Book of Sir Isaac Newton's Principia and of the Three Axioms or Laws of Motion (1787). In his preface, he writes, "…the following essay is intended to support, extend, and improve the Newtonian system. On the contrary, improvements imply imperfection, and…
