Description:
New York: George Dearborn, 1837. First Formal Book Publication. The poem appeared earlier in some newspapers and almanacs. In this anthology, it is credited to Moore, although there has been minor controversy and a weak case put forward questioning his authorship. Publisher’s decorated cloth; all edges gilt; library bookplate; some spotting and wear; minor foxing; a good to very good copy. The poem has of course, become most familiar by its opening line, “Twas the night before Christmas...”

Description:
Philadelphia: Hickman & Hazard, 1821. First American Edition. Two volumes; in the publisher’s paper covered boards; edges untrimmed; spine labels perished; stained and mended; a good set. Issued anonymously (by the author of Waverley and Ivanhoe), this is a scarce edition, especially in the original binding. Each volume has the book label of “George Peabody of Salem,” and one volume has his name in ink on the front free endpaper, although the hand is unidentified. This is possibly, but not likely, the famous George Peabody, a successful businessman and philanthropist. While he was from Danvers (at an earlier time, part of Salem), and a nearby town was named for him, most of his life was spent in England.

New York: Random House 1964, 1964. First Edition. Goldstone A41. Publisher’s wrappers; fine in a custom slipcase and chemise. Presentation copy; inscribed inside the front wrapper by the author, “For Bob Keene From John & Charley Steinbeck.” The recipient was a bookshop owner in Southampton, New York, a Sag Harbor friend of Steinbeck, and almost certainly an acquaintance of the late Charley. In the printed letter, which is, of course, an introduction, Steinbeck mentions the death some months earlier of Charley, his poodle companion in 1962’s Travels with Charley.

Description:
New York: Scribner’s, 1950. First American Edition. A fine copy in a second state dust jacket with some tiny nicks but an unfaded spine. Often referred to inaccurately as a second “issue.” Hanneman calls this a state, and while the terms are often used interchangeably, their meanings are substantially different. A state refers to a change made during the printing while an issue refers to the sequence of publication. In other words, had this been an issue rather than a state, it would have been available for purchase later than the first. In the interest of honest and full disclosure, setting strenuous efforts aside, this cataloguer admits to the occasional past sin of using these terms carelessly.
