Description:
Paris: G. Dellatre & Cie (Printer). Very good. Color lithographed folded card (4.74" x 3.5") advertising the Bal Tabarin cabaret in Paris. Undated, but early 20th century. The Jules-Alexandre Grun artwork on the front is better known as a poster, which was published in 1904, the year the club opened. The text inside -- an excerpt from a newspaper notice by "Curnonsky" (i.e., celebrated food writer Maurice Edmond Sailland) -- notes the addition of "Mr. Brun" as a second manager, suggesting a slightly later date, possibly around 1914. There is additional brief promotional text on the back in French, English ("Every night, French cancan and Cosmopolitan dances. Every Saturday special gala night with the beauties of Paris in the cortege which starts at half past twelve"), Spanish, and German. Very good condition, with some light soiling to the margins.

Minor creasing at base of spine; clean and sound. William Pinkerton (1846-1923) was the son of Allan Pinkerton, founder of the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency. In this address, William discusses so-called "bank sneak thieves" -- smooth-talking, well-dressed professional con men who executed carefully planned thefts of cash or securities from while bank employees were distracted by confederates. The portraits show many of the most notorious of this type of criminal.

New York: Heron Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 199 pp + illustrations, with frontispiece. A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Rather than being numbered, this copy is designated "B" and was presumably an author's presentation copy, as it is additionally inscribed (without salutation) "with best wishes for a successful year with the N.Y. Soc. for Sup. of Vice / from [name uncertain] and myself / Erskine Caldwell." It seems likely that this inscription dates from a few years after the publication date. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Apparently the recipient of this copy didn't care to actually read the book, as many of the pages…
