Homely but serviceable little book. 2 maps are present in the books back pocket and I surmise this is as made, book is 8th ed. Text edges are stained in a coffeelike way, the interior is largely unaffected. NY: Barse & Hopkins, 1909. Hardcover. Good/None. Average little book, penned over owner name first endsheet. Customary age wear, unmarked binding sound. Excuse the lecture that follows, but, there is some clarification required. Service was a Non-US writer, writing poetry on Canadian subjects, whose publisher, in Canada was Briggs of Toronto in this era, they did a 1909 HC first with dust jacket that is highly prized. Apparently in 1909 B&H and Stern both did US versions of the work, the B&H was done with a dust jacket (usually necessary to have if so made for a high value sale) the Stern perhaps not. Mandeville's 89 guide says 1909, B&H, 137 page, top edge gilt, edition not specified. Our book lacks the T.E.G. and gives Stern as holder of the 1909 copyright. Still, with the Wiese/Pinner illustrations and a charming, though edge tattered jacket this one is incredibly cute. There is gift inscription and darkened area first endsheet from loosely laid in news clipping? New York: Viking, 1969. Second Printing . Hardcover. Good+/Good+. Scarce, early hardback by the noted Trillin. The sound, attractive book has some issues which I think are the work of the bindery. There is an odd light, symmetrical paterning of the endsheets and pastedowns. Book is otherwise clean and unbumped. Jacket has short tears, but again, perhaps due to color choices at the bindery, has an unusal pattern with lots of sunning, especially to the spine. While this has a 1st edition statement in place, given that the jacket has no price I am reasonably sure it is a book clubbing from the firsts unaltered plates. As many will know a price is rarely but sometimes seen on a BCE, but, I have never seen an unpriced US trade edition dust jacket where the publisher was a commercial enterprise unless it WAS a BCE and therefore a false first.
