Description:
Calcutta: Government of India Central Publication Branch [volume 2, Delhi: Manager of Publications], 1927-33. First edition, three parts in 2 volumes, 4to (320 x 235 mm), original blue quarter morocco, 48 collotype plates, cont. half morocco, vol. II a little rubbed. The Bakhshali manuscript is a mathematical document found in 1881 by a local farmer in the vicinity of the village of Bakhshali, near the city of Peshawar in what was then British India and is now Pakistan. It is written in ink on birch bark, a common medium for manuscripts in northwestern India throughout much of history. In the tough climate of India and neighbouring regions, such things deteriorate rapidly, and it is miraculous that this document has survived. The Bakhshali manuscript is in a very damaged state, but is a valuable mathematical record nonetheless. The manuscript was donated to the Bodleian Library at Oxford University early in the twentieth century.(American Mathematical Society).

Description:
London: [s.n.], 1790. First and only edition, 12mo, [2], 45, [1]pp., with half-title, some minor spotting, orig. marbled paper wrappers, cont. manuscript notation of title and author on upper cover "The Battle of Newland 1790, By Benjn. Clarkson, Alverthorpe Hall". ESTC fails to attribute this to an any particular author, however, the contemporary inscription on the upper cover does give strong evidence to Benjamin Clarkson as being the writer of these poems. Benjamin Clarkson (d. 1820), a Wakefield attorney, resided at Alverthorpe Hall. "Several well known circumstances which happened some years ago in the town and neighbourhood of Wakefield, gave rise to the following Ballad". (Advertisement leaf). Rare; ESTC locating 4 copies (all in the UK).

Description:
London: Printed for John Murray, 1809. Second edition, [ii], 39, [1]pp., recent marbled boards. A heroic poem about the bloody but inconclusive battle at Talavera, southwest of Madrid (July 27-28, 1809), in which a combined British-Spanish force under Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) forced the French army of King Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, to withdraw from field. The author, John Wilson Croker, was a high-Tory politician and man of letters, one of the founders of the legendary Quarterly Review and for nearly thirty years its primary contributor. Wellington himself singled out this poem for praise. Surprisingly uncommon: we find no copy of the first or this second edition, Copac locates the third and later editions only.
