Description:
NY: Phaidon, 2002. (USA) 1st American edition. No markings, Fine. Wraps with dust jacket, 160pp, colour photos. Cai Guo-Qiang was born in Quanzhou, China, in 1960, and lived in Tokyo from 1985 to 1995, before moving to New York. During the 1990s he emerged on to the international art scene and has become a major figure of contemporary Chinese art. He has made projects in all the inhabited continents of the world. Cai's early works from the 1980s took the form of oil paintings, but these gradually evolved as he became interested in harnessing the power of nature to develop his work in new and unusual ways. His early experiments included making rubbings from rocks and trees on the canvas before painting it, and using exploding gunpowder to mark and scorch the canvas. This interest in location is fundamental to the artist's work, which frequently alters or develops as it is exhibited at new sites.(2.8 JM LVR 206/b2. 1st. Paperback. Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12".

Cloth hardcover, 803pp. This edition, revised in 1969, collect all of the canto segments to date. The Cantos by Ezra Pound is a long poem in 109 sections plus a number of drafts and fragments added as a supplement at the request of the poem's American publisher, James Laughlin. Most of it was written between 1915 and 1962. It is a book-length work, widely considered to present formidable difficulties to the reader. Description:
NY: Alfred A Knopf, 2009. (USA) Stated first edition. No markings, Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. |Hardcover, 406pp, index, no illus. Armstrong is the author of numerous other books on religious affairs. From the jacket: Moving from the Paleolithic Age to the present, Karen Armstrong details the lengths to which humankind has gone to experience a sacred reality that it called God, Brahman, Nirvana, Allah, or Dao. She examines the diminished impulse toward religion in our own time when a significant number of people either want nothing to do with God or question the efficacy of faith. With her trademark depth of knowledge and profound insight, Armstrong elucidates how the changing world has necessarily altered the importance of religion at both societal and individual levels. And she makes a powerful, convincing argument for structuring a faith that speaks to the needs of our dangerously polarized age. (2.2 JM LVR 205/4. 1st. Hardcover.
