Description:
Chicago, 1908. 4to, self-covered. (4) pages. Near fine. A bit of a mystery. Famed collector William Forrester Dunham published checklists and "Quick Finding Lists" for Hard Times Tokens, colonial and territorial coins, and Encased Postage Stamps, and published in 1908 a 48-page compendium of such lists in Los Angeles. This 4-page list reproduced the Canadian portion of that 48-page publication, but bears a Chicago imprint under the name of Dunham's son Chester (1891-1959).

Description:
Montreal: Wm. Drysdale & Co, 1886. 12mo, original russet cloth, gilt. 118, (2) pages. Front joint cracked; institutional stamp on title. Very good. Quite rare. As the author states in his preface, ìThe present Essay ... attempts to place in an accessible form much information scattered over many volumes, journals and MSS. Moreover, it brings to public notice the creation of the important public department of Archives, with some account of its establishment: a department by which the study of Canadian History must be greatly advanced.î Kingsford is best known to modern numismatists for his important 1874 work on the Vexator tokens, A Canadian Political Coin. While the present work is not numismatic in focus, it provides much interesting context for numismatic study.

CNB, page 56: "a documented account of card money in Canada, that addresses rival claims to such an innovation, and amends Ernest Zay's story of this unusual currency. McLachlan not only adds precision to the history of card money, he has also examined post-mortem, estate inventories in the notarial archives, which list card money among the assets.
