Description:
New York, 1961. Some small tears to edges and horizontal cracks to the surface from having been rolled; pencil annotation at lower right corner. Hand-painted maquette artwork for a poster, approx. 18 X 25 in., painted in black with "Liljan Espenak in red with a pair of ochre accents. Signed by the artist, Boris Lurie. The Norwegian-born dancer was a pioneer in dance therapy, working with physically and mentally disabled hospital patients. She performed improvisationally, in dialogue with the audience, and with improvised piano accompaniment. This Carnegie Hall recital was her final performance, as she dedicated the rest of career to therapy. Boris Lurie, the artist, was the founder of the No!art movement, which rejected contemporary Pop and Abstract Expressionist art, the art market and critics, and called for social and political engagement.
