Lisbon, Na Officina de Pascoal da Sylva, 1716.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, disbound. In good to very good condition. 23 pp., 1 folding chart (reinforced at fold). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. At the Battle of Petrovaradin (or Peterwardein) on August 5, 1716, the Austrians under Prince Eugene of Savoy decisively defeated a considerably larger Ottoman force led by Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha. It was one of the major engagements of the Austro-Turkish War of 1716-1718. This account, compiled from several others, gives an overview of events since the signing of the Treaty of Karlowitz, 1699, then describes the approach of Turkish forces, the first hostilities of the war, the disposition of troops, the course and aftermath of the battle, and subsequent celebrations in Vienna. At the time Petrovaradin was on the border of territory held by the Austrians; today it is in Vojvodina, Serbia. Prince Eugene of Savoy was one of the leading military figures of the day, famous for decisively defeating… Read More

Old ink signature (illegible) dated 1789 on blank verso of p. 21; same hand has energetically corrected errors in quire signatures on the third through sixth leaves (original signatures illegible). 21 pp., (1 blank l.). *** Second of at least 3 separate editions of this pastoral poem in 55 stanzas. The first was Lisbon: Na Officina Luisiana, 1780, and the third Lisbon: Na Offic. de Francisco Borges de Sousa, 1789. João Xavier de Mattos was quite a popular writer of poetry in his time (praised even by Bocage), although he has been mostly forgotten since. He favored the Italian style and took Camões as his model. Innocêncio, in a tone almost parental in its severe disapproval, says that Mattos gave up a decent career as a magistrate (ouvidor in Vidigueira) to devote himself to writing: his name "foi n'outro tempo tão… Read More

Description:
[Colophon] Lisbon, na Offic. de Francisco Borges de Sousa, 1785.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, disbound. Caption title. Clean and crisp. Overall in good to very good condition. 15 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION? The characters are Jozino, Jonia, Rorino, and Risseu. José Daniel Rodrigues da Costa (1757-1832), a native of Leira, was a fervent supporter of D. Miguel. He held many government posts in Portugal and was a prolific writer: his works (the earliest of which dates to 1777) were very popular and often reprinted during his lifetime. Innocêncio uncharacteristically declines to catalogue all the author's works: "Parece-me desnecessario além de difficil, apresentar aqui um catalogo geral de todas as suas producções." Rodrigues da Costa was a poet of arcadismo, using the name Josino Leirense in the Nova Arcadia. His narrative poem O balão dos habitantes da lua (1819) is considered the first Portuguese work of science fiction. *** Not in Innocêncio; on the author, see IV, 304-5; XII, 295;… Read More
