Description:
London: Darton and Harvey, for Rivington et al, 1793. Rebacked retaining the leather spine label. Cover bordered in double-ruled blind fillets. Corners and edges worn. Endpapers darkened at periphery, appear to be original. Engraved title-page with vignette. Engraved memorial frontispiece, by Neagle, bound following the 11-page "Life of John Gay". The fables are in two parts, 66 in all, each embellished with a copper-engraving. These are found two to a page, each an oval vignette. Title-page shows moderate foxing, confined mainly to the edges. Text is very fresh, indeed. Some plates are slightly darkened along peripheral borders, with only occasional light foxing. Table of fables directly precedes the first fable. A nicely-restored English fable book, beautifully-illustrated with copper-plates. The author died in 1732, 61 years before this book was published. 256pp.. Later Edition. Contemporary Tree Calf. Light Edge Wear./No Jacket. Octavo.
