Volume 1 has a bit of sunning and wear to the top edge, jacket shows some wear and browning and mild staining. Volumes 2-5 are near fine or better, with occasional creasing to the jacket flaps. Volume 2 has some minor foxing to the top edge, volume 5 has some minor shelfwear on the bottom edge. An excellent set. Sartre's monumental study of Flaubert, on which he spent the last ten years of his life. Quite rare to find the full set, published over the course of twelve years.

Corners a bit rubbed, abrasion to lower edge of front cover and first several leaves, minor edgewear. Catalog of an exhibition held at 451 Madison Avenue, the Whitelaw Reid Mansion, in New York, October 14 to November 7, 1942. It was the first major show of Surrealist art in America and included work by Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Tanguy, Rene Magritte, Hans Arp, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Frida Kahlo, Joan Miro, Meret Oppenheim, Leonora Carrington, Andre Masson, Pablo Picasso, Kay Sage, and many others. Many of the artists, including Breton, Ernst, Carrington, and others, had fled to New York due to the war, and their presence there energized the Surrealist scene.
