Description:
London: Country Life, 1918. First Edition. One of the finest garden books of the twentieth century. Christopher Hussey and Gertrude Jekyll created this impressive pictorial treatise dealing with "garden design in relation to architecture, and, to some extent, with architectural design in relation to gardening." Gertrude Jekyll in her association with Hussey and more famously, Edward Lutyens "devised appropriate rather than merely fashionable solutions; a surveyor's grasp of line and contour, allied to understanding of colour and plants, gave distinction to her designs." Jekyll's books are highly collectible and remain among the most important of all writings in the oeuvre of the garden. This is the most famous book on the subject, comprising introductory text and a superb assembly of photographs of garden ornaments of every kind, including wood and iron gates, steps, balustrades, urns, vases, courts, paved ways, seats, loggias, orangeries, dovecotes, parterres, sundials, topiary, pergolas,…

Description:
Melbourne: Green Press, 1937. Signed Limited Edition. Edition limited to 100 numbered copies: Sir Ernest Scott's copy with signature on front endpaper. "Even today, when professional interest in undertaking work in Asia is stronger than ever, Hardy Wilson's up-front appreciation of the importance of Chinese architecture stands without parallel." Stanislaus Fung  & Mark Jackson, Architectural Theory Review (Issue 1: Volume 1, 1996) Building upon an already established relationship with the National Library, Wilson's orginal drawings for the fifty plates in "Grecian and Chinese Architecture" joined their collection in 1935. "It was while contemplating the roofline of Purulia that Wilson made a discovery that would change the direction of his work. He became dissatisfied with the way the straight, Western line of the roof appeared to fall unchecked towards the ground, with nothing to ‘hold the eye' on its downward journey. Only Oriental, and particularly Chinese architecture avoided this…

Description:
London and New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1892. Limited first edition. Ford, H.J.. A handsome copy of the third of Lang's beautiful fairy books with illustrations by Henry J. Ford. The Scots author was an avid collector of fairy tales from around the world and many of the stories in this collection, particularly the classic French tales, are translated here into English for the first time. In the preface Lang writes, "The stories in all the books are borrowed from many countries; some are French, some German, some Russian, some Italian, some Scotish, some English, one Chinese. However much these nations differ about trifles, they all agree in liking fairy tales." One of the French stories collected in 'The Green Fairy Book' may have provided inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. Issued in the year of Tolkien's birth, we know that Tolkien had read the 'The Enchanted Ring' in Lang's 'Green Fairy Book'. Tolkien makes reference to the collection in his dissertation,…

Oxford: H. Daniel, 1890. Gilt Morocco. Edition limited to one hundred copies. 'They that in play can do the thing they would Having an instinct throned in reasons place/ -And every perfect action hath the grace Of indolence or thoughtless hardihood- These are the best: yet be there workmen good Who lose in earnestness control of face Or reckon means and rapt in effort base Reach to their end by steps well understood. Me whom thou sawest of late strive with the pains Of one who spends his strength to rule his nerve- Even as a painter breathlessly who strains His scarcely moving hand lest it should swerve- Behold me now free from the care that stains And master of the art I chose to serve.'.
