First edition of Shaw's beautifully illustrated work on the art of illumination and depicting ornamentation from the sixth through the seventeenth centuries. A splendid work featuring an illuminated extra title page and 59 hand-colored lithographs. Ruari McLean in Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing called Shaw's publications "among the finest achievements of Victorian book design and illustration." 4to. Good plus in publisher's green printed wraps which are darkened, some staining, spine and corners chipped with loss, particularly to back wrapper but not affecting text, small prior owner bookplate, contents are generally clean and the hand-colored illustrations bright.. A delightful facsimile reprint of a book first published in 1823, now featuring "thirty-one hand-coloured engravings." Bright, multi-colored illustrations adorn most of the pages telling the tales of adventures, in verse, of Deborah Dent and her five wonky donkeys, each gifted with a sharp sense. The introduction contains an interesting discussion where publisher Tuer gives a history of the Minerva Press and why this book's early attribution to the famous press was a fallacy (and why John Ruskin incorrectly attributed a similar title to Minerva). 8vo. Good in publisher's elaborate gilt-decorated cloth, all edges gilt, engraved title and a few other leaves loose but present, spine repaired, wear to edges and corners with fraying, scattered soiling but contents generally clean, and curiously with stamp of the Birmingham Assay Office on the front free endpaper.. First edition. One of the earliest English works to describe the metals, pigments, and processes employed in producing illuminated manuscripts. De Hamel includes this work as one of the "great nineteenth-century picture books of medieval illumination," which were in turn used as pattern books for countless Victorian copies. Good plus in publisher's brown blind-stamped cloth with gilt spine, sunned, rebacked with original back strip, rubbed and soiled, corners bumped, plates clean and contents generally clean and tight though with a few pages with margins restored or repaired tears, occasional light spotting and finger-soiling, dampstaining to pastedowns, and vol. II with spine lean.. Third edition of Mudie's study of the birds of Britain, which features 19 handsome engraved hand-colored plates plus additional woodcut illustrations. Very good in publisher's gilt stamped red morocco cloth, recased with spines laid down, some staining to boards, bookplates in each volume and prior owner stamp/inscription in each, and blind stamp for "W H Smith & Son Library, 186 Strand" being Smith's short-lived lending library but without other indications of library ownership (Sadleir's copy had the same blind stamp).. First edition of the first separate published work by Matthew Prior. Both Montagu and Prior were the joint authors, but the contributions of each has been long debated. Period paneled sheep with large scuffs, chips and some tears, otherwise very good with contents clean and only mild instances of light foxing or staining, early ink initial to title.. The Dublin edition, issued in the same year as the English edition. As proclaimed opposite the title page, "[t]his edition is much more correct than that of London, having been compared with two Manuscripts..." Clarendon's account of the events in Ireland after the death of Charles I, a single volume addition to his popular History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, which had previously circulated (and was plagiarized) in manuscript only.
