Description:
Lyon, Antoine du Ry, 1526. 4to. 8 leaves. 421 pages (i.e. 430). Full calf, gilt frame on the boards, ornamented spine, edges gilt on marbling (A. Clost). First Edition of the first Hebrew publication of Santes Pagnino (1470-1536), one of the most remarkable Hebraicists of his time. Born in Lucca (Italy) in 1470, Santes Pagnino was the pupil of Savonarola and he dedicated almost entirely his life to the study of oriental languages. After teaching in Rome, under the protection of Pope Leo X, he lived in Avignon then in Lyon where he settled definitely, surrounded by a great reputation. He died in 1541. The Hebrew grammar, paginated in this first edition from right to left in the usual style of Hebrew books, was reprinted several times in an abridged form during all the 16th century. Very nice copy, exceptionally clean and crisp.

Description:
Paris, J. Bry Aîné, 1854. Folio. 2 leaves. 207 pages. Later half-morocco with corners, smooth ornate spine, polychrome printed cover preserved (binding circa 1930). First Edition. Published at the time of the Crimean War, this satirical work illustrated by Gustave Doré is a striking example of political propaganda through images, and is one of the 'incunabulum' of comics. It is for this reason that its reissue was presented in 2005 at the Angoulême Comic Strip Festival, the main event of its kind in France, in the 'Heritage' section. Multiplying innovations, both in terms of layout and the narrative use of drawing, this splendid album painted a vitriolic portrait of a barbaric and bloodthirsty Russia. It was banned in Russia as soon as it was published, and it was not until 2012 that a Russian version finally appeared. Two pages have been largely colored in red to evoke the bloody exactions of the Russian army. Very beautiful example devoid of freckles, on all margins and carefully bound around… Read More

First Edition (second printing, the text of which has been completely reset and decorated with a map showing the Greek coasts with the ships arranged in battle order). Michel de Cervantes, the unforgettable author of Don Quixote, showed great pride throughout his life for having taken part in the fight, during which he lost his left arm. "One of the most extensive accounts of the Battle of Lepanto, with details as to the Venetian, Spanish, and Papal ships" (cf. Göllner). "The text of this issue [printed the same year as the first] has been completely reset, with the errata corrected, and a map has been inserted (…).
