Hereford. 1800-1830. ~ The Hereford Journal was first published in Hereford in 1770 as a weekly 4-page publication by Charles Pugh and cost 3d. It was known as The British Chronicle or Pugh's Hereford Journal. A Conservative publication, the paper consisted of foreign news, news from London, advertisements, poetry and anecdotes.

NP, 1850. Unbound. Very Good. HOLNE VICARAGE, and surrounding area. Five original watercolours, on four sheets, depicting Holne Vicarage, Holne Village, Holne Cott[age], and two of the New Bridge at Holne. c.17cm x 25cm (3), 16cm x 17cm, 10cm x 14cm. c1850. £195.00 + vat ~ These were most probably executed by members of the Waddon-Martyn family of Tonacombe Manor, Morwenstow, Cornwall in the mid 19th century. Tonacombe is the original of "Chapel" in 'Westward Ho !' which was partly written there, and Charles Kingsley was a frequent visitor. He was born at Holne Vicarage, under the brow of Dartmoor. The house no longer exists, but stood on the site of the present vicarage.

Signed for Mr Courtman by one E. Palmer. 95mm x 159mm. 1770. ~ Taylor Courtman, the Strand, London, supplied goods to America and the colonies, and is listed as a subscriber to The American Negotiator: Or, The Various Currencies of the British Colonies. By John Wright. 1761.

NP, 1830. Unbound. Very Good. CAPE OF GOOD HOPE. Handwritten letter dated September 27th, 1830 from the Cape of Good Hope. Three pages, to Miss Billingsley, London, with remnants of a red seal. The letter is signed "Affectionate Sister, Helen Billingsley". Light original fold marks. 222mm x 185mm. 1830. The Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette 1830 - 1 - January to March notes the arrival in Table Bay on the 4th January of Mrs Billingsey and Miss Henderson, aboard the Cornwallis. She may have been the wife of William Billingsley, a naval captain, (died Cape Town 1848). She apologises for not replying sooner, but her sister's last letter arrived on the eve of her departure to Jamaica, aboard the Eclipse. She asks her sister to purchase for two ball dresses, "not very expensive but fashionable" and have them made by Mrs Dukes, "our dressmaker... 40 Glaster Terrace, Commercial Road." Hassan', an oriental youth in a turban, leading a camel, the head of which is partly seen left and carrying a fan of feathers, within an oval. 1788. Published Feb 1st 1788, by C. Taylor, no 10 near Castle Street, Holborn. BM has original watercolour by Samuel Shelley, but not this engraving. Rather dusty. 180mm x 128mm. Plate mark.
