London: Soncino Press, 1930. Rutherston, Albert. Small quarto. xl, (3), 209pp. One of nine copies printed on Roman Vellum, signed by the editor, Cecil Roth, and the illustrator, Albert Rutherston. With fourteen full-page stencilled illustrations, plus seventy small ornaments, all in color. Rutherston's bright depictions of the Passover story, including illustrations of the Jews under Pharaoh, the parting of the Red Sea, the Ten Commandments, and the prophets looking over modern children at play, bring both joy and gravity to the sacred text. Rutherston collaborated with the Curwen Press repeatedly over his career, and this is perhaps one of his most accomplished works, possibly influenced by his years in Palestine while serving in the British Army. San Francisco, CA: UFO Posters, 1967. Dulley, John. Four-color offset lithograph poster, incorporating figures stylized after the Kama Sutra and an early modern engraving partitioned as letters. The engraving uses, by rearrangement, what appears to be the printer's mark of Sigismund Feyerabend, with the motto: "Si cupis ut celebri stet tua fama loco, pervigiles habeas oculos animumque sagacem." UFO Gallery, located at 1608 Haight Street, was a regular and central venue for grassroots and countercultural art shows and performances. Slight toning to edges, else near fine. A cheerful collection of haiku and poems written and assembled as a Christmas gift for young Patty Terzano, the daughter of friends of the Massmann family. (N.p.: L'Union Internationale des Etudiants, 1980. Broadside, printed in black, red, and blue. This poster's statement is immediate and direct: end the fascist regime in Chile. It specifically refers to the Pinochet dictatorship, which terrorized the Chilean populace for much of the latter half of the twentieth century. The poster's paper is thin enough that it was likely a paste-up, and it is easy to imagine the impact rows upon rows of the sheet would have had on passersby. The use of the French language reflects the relatively high demographic of European immigrants and their descendents residing in Chile, with French ancestry a not insubstantial subset. However, French is not a commonly spoken language in Chile, and it is more likely that the poster represents a transatlantic effort to protest the Pinochet government and its human rights abuses. Printed on the occasion of APHA's 33rd Annual Conference, October 10-12, 2008, this broadside is decorated with wood type printed in various fonts, sizes, and colors to form an abstract design. Fine.

NY: Random House, 1940. First edition. Faulkner's first installment in his Snopes trilogy charts the fortunes (or otherwise) of the Snopes family in Mississippi. The novel served as the basis for the 1958 film, The Long Hot Summer with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Welles. Pictorial title page tipped-in facing p. (iv). Publisher's black cloth shows mild shelfwear, a trace of faint dampstaining to lower margin of several interior pages. Overall very good in very good first issue dust wrapper that shows some color restoration to extremities. Bookplate. (Petersen A20a).

Hamburg: Gesellschaft der Bibliophilen, 1927. Czeschka, Carl Otto. Octavo. (5)ff. A keepsake for the bibliophilic society of Hamburg, designed and edited by Czeschka to display within floral borders Hamlet's famed monologue, which is set in his Antiqua typeface, and printed by Genzsch & Heyse, the firm that released the type specimen book for this face in 1917. A fine copy of a scarce work, known only in five institutional holdings - only one of which is in the U.S.

(England, 1900. A set of nine hand-drawn and aquatinted costumes, each matted separately, with a delicately featured lady's head that transfers between the costumes by fitting into a slot at the neck. The costumes include a riding habit flowing down the side of a horse, outdoor wear, and dresses in which the wearer is holding a fan, a book, or pages of music. Five of the matted costumes have been hinged together. One sheet has a repair patch and two closed tears not affecting the image, another has one small closed tear not affecting the image, and a few sheets show light soiling. Altogether a lovely set showing a variety of English ladies' costumes and activities. (Seven of the cards measure 9 by 11 inches [23x28cm]; the other two are 10 3/8 by 11 inches [26x28cm]).

(France, 1830. Seven vols. Unpaginated. Each volume devotes its contents to a particular theme: flowers, animals, insects, the Latin alphabet, caricatured figures, professions, and landscapes. All illustrations are finely and minutely rendered, suggesting a skilled hand, early to the use of color in printed illustration arts. The volume of animals bears a manuscript title page ("Animaux"). In the volume of professions, each illustration is labeled by hand, and the trades represented include soldiers, peddlers, knitters, farmers, and a lackey, among many others both serious and comedic. The volume of landscapes features identifiable landmarks, such as the Hagia Sophia and Matterhorn. All volumes bound in green pebbled paper over boards. Some illustrations rubbed, expert repairs to some of the bindings, else near fine.

Rutland, VT and Tokyo: Tuttle, 1952. Four small folio volumes. No limitation indicated; Schlosser (No. 63) notes that 250 copies were planned, "but there is no indication as to the final size of the edition." This is one of the finest studies of Japanese papermaking, brimming with specimens, including old and rare documented papers from the eighth and ninth centuries. Volume I contains a history and description of Japanese papermaking, illustrated with photographs of a papermaking village and a hand-colored facsimile of the earliest Japanese illustrated work on papermaking (with an English translation). Volume II contains 187 specimens from the Nara period (710-793) to the present day. Volume III contains the Contemporary Collection of 139 full-page specimens from twenty districts, with descriptions. Volume IV is the Watermark Collection, with twenty exquisite and complex pictorial light-and-shade watermarks, made by a hand-rubbing process unknown in the West. 1935. Three octavo sheets, each one with Gill's notations in graphite and colored pencil. Two sheets list thirty-seven of Gill's sculptures, including his Westminster Stations. Next to the sculptures' names are an array of further identifying notes - personal owner (Rupert Brooke, et al.), location (Glasgow, USA), and insitutions (Tate Gallery), mainly - as well as numbers corresponding to the endnotes provided on the third sheet. This last sheet appears to be a series of tasks that Gill set out for himself in order to fill administrative gaps; a number of the comments mention photographs to be taken or correspondence to associates. Prominent stain from now-removed staples at center-head of the pages, else a near fine glimpse at Gill's approach to the business of being an artist.

Bern & Biel, Switzerland: Ernst Kuhn, 1920. Haas, Erna. Square 16mo. (45)ff., printed on rectos only. First issue. A striking picture book in the Swiss dialect, illustrated with forty-two brightly colored full-page woodcuts by Erna Haas in the style of the Wiener Werkstätte. The scenes depicted in the woodcuts are charming and folkloric, showing domestic tasks and children at play. Each page is surrounded by a delicate decorative border. The text is comprised of thirteen nursery rhymes, which are fully integrated into the illustrations. This was Haas's only book; little is known about the illustrator. Printed by the Graphic Arts Institute Säuberlin & Pfeiffer. Endpapers decorated in blue with figures from the woodcuts. Bound in tan patterned paper boards with a pictorial label. Some light marginal spotting to a few pages, not affecting illustrations, else a fine copy. (Kaiser, Swiss Picture Books, p. 25).

Some rubbing to extremities of book, else near fine. In original purple dust wrapper, which shows some shelf-toning and rubbing and is price-clipped. (Toledano A8).

NY: McDowell Obolensky, 1959. First edition. Inscribed to Jean Stafford and her third husband, New Yorker writer A. J. Liebling. Taylor's titular riff on Anna Karenina's famous opening line heralds the tenor of many of his compiled stories. Bound in full green cloth. Some toning, dampstain to tail inconsequential to interior pages, else very good in very good dust wrapper, overall lightly toned and with dampstain visible at verso.

London: Griffith and Farran, 1857. 24mo. (iii), 26, (2)pp. Frontispiece shows the titular Harry harangued by housing for his hen. The text within has six short stories, framed as the happenstance result of a hearty Aunt Hannah helping her H-less nephew with his handicapped pronunciation. A heartfelt and handy volume. Bound in green wrappers showing general wear, including rubbing and toning, yet bright internally and very good.
