One page on mourning stationary from T. W. Jackson, the curator of the Hope Portrait Collection in Oxford, to an unnamed recipient regarding a query for a portrait, "Hope Port. Coll[ection], Oxford, 22 Oct. 1909. Dear Sir, We have no portrait of a John Paine [sic], the translator of Villon, in the collection: and I don't remember having seen one anywhere. His name does not occur in the ALA Index of portraits contained in printed books. I am, yours... T. W. Jackson." Referring to the English poet, translator, and friend to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Payne, Jackson may have missed the entries and holding in the collection, due to a misspelling of Payne's name (viz Paine).

Spine with five raised bands. The scarce first edition of the collected works of James I, King of England, said to be, "One of the finest specimens of Jacobean book-production," including, in part, to its highly accomplished copper-engraved frontispiece by Simon Pass, of James enthroned in robes, as well as an additional engraved title-page. Tokyo, 1938. 4to. Color printed wrappers, extensively illustrated Japanese children's book. Ikyuu san was the name of a famous priest boy in Japanese lore. Spine chipped, corner wear, occasional soiling, overall a very good copy of an interesting Japanese Pre-WWII children's book with a wide variety of stylistic art.

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1848. First edition. First edition. Superb full crushed morocco (brown) with bold gilt strap-work and flower design on both covers, hearts covering whole of both covers and spine, by De Sauty (signed 'De Sauty' on front turn-in). A wonderful binding by De Sauty (1870-1949), active in London from 1898-1923, worked for Riviere & Son as well as the Hampstead Bindery. Binding hinges skillfully repaired, some wear to spine, otherwise near fine and distinctively Art Nouveau binding.

Original color pictorial paper covered boards with exquisite and intricate designs on both covers and spine, originally decorated endpapers. Illustrated by Richard Doyle. Fragile covers show wear predominantly at outer edges and at spine leaving most, if not all of the pictorial images on both covers and spine in tact, a very rare survival considering the delicacy of the paper covering. At the time of research, we could not locate any other copies in the original binding. AEG. Internally clean and bright.

Top of spine with very small chipping. A rare example of a sought after "Nineties" title.

An exceedingly scarce survival, the earliest of works by Lily Montague (1873 ñ 1963), influential female Jewish author, suffragist (she was a founding member of the Jewish League for Woman Suffrage), and early influencer on the rights of women who played a major role in Progressive Judaism. We can find no other copies of this early work by Montagu in the marketplace, and few are known to have survived, much less a Presentation Copy. Written in Hebrew, and printed from back to forward, as per Hebrew texts. 115pp. Original publishers fine wove olive green cloth, lettering in black on clover with single thick black ruled border, lettering on spine. Extremely scarce and earliest of novels by Sarah Brandstein Smith, Sarah (1888-1968), journalist, author and playwright, born in Hungary and came to the US when she was 15-years old. She quickly learned the Yiddish language in New York, and soon landed a job as a newspaper writer, became a staff columnist. She wrote several "shund" novels (equates to "trash novels," in Yiddish, but formed an outlet and catharsis for immigrants) as well as plays for the Yiddish theater. The English language play, "Piper Paid" had a run on Broadway in 1934. Another play, "Ever the Beginning" became a movie called "My Girl Tisa" with big-name stars in 1948. "Sarah B. Each page printed on one-side only uncut at the outer edges (as issued). Vignetter illustration on title page and 20 superb whole-page illustrations by Theo. Van Hoytema (1863-1917) was a celebrated Dutch artist, illustrator, lithographer and bookbinding designer who is best known for his lithographic pictures with bird stories. This classic book with early Jugendstil influences, was printed by C. M Van Gogh, who was the uncle of the artist Vincent Van Gogh. Spine rather crudely repaired with paper tape, else a very nice copy of a striking and noteworthy children's book.

Original teal blue cloth boards with stunning Nouveau pictorial covers by Arnold Lyongr¸n, stamped in white housing the loose sheets, as issued. Decorative title page and forward by Lyongr¸n, printed in lavender. With 24 superb color-tinted plates, printed in blue, green, and browns, with border rule and adjacent decorative lettering in orange. Photolithography and typography by C. G. Roeder, Leipzig. This very scarce first edition was followed in 1903 by a similar volume with 48 plates, but this original edition with 24 color-tinted monochromatic plates is very much the desired edition. The images blend various motifs of the human form with plants and animals, vases, fish bowls, bird cages, stained glass, etc., all in classic Jugendstil Art Nouveau style. Number 88 of a Limited Edition of Only 200 Copies. Printed on thick paper on one-side only with outside edges uncut forming at two-ply sheet. With highly expressive drawings, vignettes and initials in the text by Charlotte Veit. The Eskimo fairy tale was recounted by Heinrich Johannes Rink after transmission from E. Gross "The beginnings of art." A most distinctive and certainly unusual Insel-Verlag production. Corners very slightly worn, else near fine.

Folio. 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Offered here is an original "First German-Austrian government bond, 100 crowns, 1918, uncancelled, coupon, with superb Jugendstil design work in light greens and black. Near fine, with crease marks. Mounted in mat.

Prague: Dedictvi Komenskeho, 1905. First edition. First edition. Bound in the original scarce pictorial card wrappers (gray/beige with light blue design by Preissig. Twelve superb full-page color zincographs by Preissig, the renowned Czech typographer, printmaker, designer, illustrator and teacher. Very rare first edition, seldom found in the wrappers, of the famous Czech children's book. The little text portrays the transience of being on the bottom of a somewhat morbid food chain: from which the cat eats, to oxen, which serve men for a feast, which are finally buried. Alfred Langer writes to the Jugendstil artist Vojtech Preissig: "According to his motto of the" full-blooded bookgraphist, " he demanded a synthesis of craftsmanship and art. The harmony of writing and book decoration was regarded as the most desirable goal. "(Langer, Jugendstil und Buchkunst, p. 175). Near fine with minimal corner wear.

Folio (20 x 12 inches) Loose and unbound, as issued. 32 exquisite design plates of chromolithographs and lithographs showcasing the exquisite work of Albert Maennchen (1873-1935), noted German painter and designer whose art was typified and highly influenced by the Jugendstil movement in Europe. Title page and introduction page. Marginal chipping with slight loss to margins of a few pages (esp. prelims), marginal creasing. Quite scarce, and beautiful.

Original cloth backed color pictorial paper covered boards, color illustrated endpapers. 43pp with color illustrations every page, many whole page by Gertrude and Walther Caspari, important illustrators of the Jugendstil movement. Second printing issued just one year following the first edition. "Caspari's scale, strong contouring and striking perspective and finesse of presentation aims at both the smallest child to read and then take up and read again for years to come..." (Doderer). A superb copy, near fine.

Koln: H. & F. Schaffstein, 1906. Second edition. Second edition. Oblong quarto. Original color pictorial paper covered boards, beautifully patterned endsheets in color. The classic Jugendstil book, marvelously illustrated by the great Freyhold, with twelve full-page color pictures. "Freyhold's picture books are marvels in the early development of the picture book of the 20th century" (Klaus Doderer). -The pictures, "freyholding in their unspeakably immovable untouchedness and childhood" (ER White 1902 to Richard Dehmel) show us the animals of the rural environment (cows, sheep, pigs, pigeons); only the last illustration with parrots puts the viewer into an exotic mood.
