Description:
London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1919. First edition. Cloth. Bookplate on front pastedown; hinges mended neatly with glue; endsheets offset.. 8vo, 521pp; frontispiece, illustr.; original blue cloth. Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), an anglo-catholic writer and scholar of religious mysticism, was responsible for rediscovering and promoting the work of the medieval Italian poet Jacopone da Todi, author of the Stabat Mater. This book was reviewed favorably in "The Dial" by Marianne Moore, by which means it may have come to the attention of Robert McAlmon, who had befriended Moore and was arranging the publication of her first book of poems. This copy belonged to McAlmon his bookplate is on the front pastedown. McAlmon's marginal marks in ink appear on a few pages. The selection of Jacopone's poetry is extensive, comprising about half of the book's content.

N.P.: Rockbook, 1978. First edition. Hint of sun toward edges, some tiny chipping to the lower front wrapper, near fine.. 8vo, unpag.; pamphlet in wrappers, stapled. Inscribed by the poet and signed on the inside front wrapper. This was Baca's first book, written in prison, containing eight poems and the essay "Thoughts On Leaving Prison." Abandoned at two, consigned to an orphanage as a small child, a homeless illiterate teenager, Baca was incarcerated for more than six years. In prison, he taught himself to read and write and began to write poetry and to publish his poems in small magazines. His first commercial book, Immigrants In Our Own Land, was published by Louisiana State University Press in 1979. He went on to win multiple awards and become one of the most significant Chicano poets in the US and an activist supporting at-risk youth and prison literacy. A powerful and deeply moving debut. With a portrait drawing of Baca on the rear wrapper by Emiliano Hinojosa.
