As stated in this initial newsletter, the Jewish pacifist organization was formed in the New York area in 1941-1942, by a combination of Columbia University students, pacifist Rabbis and Jewish military officers. The organization was headed initially by Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld (1913-1966) and Rabbi Isidor B. Hoffman (1899-1981). Aso involved in the organization were Max Ticktin, Kurt Wolff, and Abraham Cronbach. This collection contains the woodcuts of Israeli artist Jacob Steinhardt, chronologically arranged from 1911 through 1952, with a total of 57 woodcuts, including 16 hand-colored, in multiple hues. The monochromatic woodblocks themselves are beautifully printed in black as well as shades of brown, purple, blue and burgundy over white tan and yellow heavy stock paper. This work is considered to be the best example of Steinhardt's colored woodblock work, for which he used a technique, referred to in the preface as a "reversal of the coloured woodcut of the 16th century."
