Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1960. First edition, first printing. This is a very good (or better) copy. The Adrian Bailey dust wrapper has some light creasing to both the front and rear panels, with some general shelf wear throughout. It has not been price clipped (16s net). The boards are fine with some very light bumping at the spine tips, the gilt bright and intact. The text blocks are mildly foxed at the top and foredge and the internals tight, bright and free from inscriptions. This is a very good (or better) copy. A fine debut from Barstow, putting him in the ranks of John Braine, Alan Sillitoe and David Storey. Adapted into a film, directed by John Schlesinger and starring Alan Bates as young and bitter protagonist Vic Brown and June Ritchie as Ingrid Rothwell.

Description:
London: Faber & Faber, 1961. First edition, first printing. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper is beautifully illustrated by Edward Bawden and has not been price clipped (18s net). There is some minor wear to the publishers cloth at the spine tips, and some light bumping to the corners. The text blocks are mostly bright and clean, with no notable foxing. The authors signature is signed to the front fly leaf in black ink: 'Yours sincerely Alfred Duggan'. This copy, overall, is in very good condition and wildly scarce signed. As the Vikings invade ninth-century England, only Alfred the Great, King of the West Saxons, takes a stand in this epic novel of medieval warfare.
