"Peabody's chief contribution in 1867 was the allocation of $3.5 million for the establishment of the Peabody Education Fund. This fund was primarily intended to advance education in the South and to ameliorate relations in America after the Civil War. Monies from this fund were used to support southern tax-supported schools, to aid black colleges in the South, and to establish the George Peabody College for Teachers and other normal schools in southern states.
