Fine contemporary purple calf by Ingalton of Eton (binder's ticket on front pastedown), covers decorated in gilt and blind with gilt scrolling cornerpieces and gilt rules, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with scrolling and floral decorations, brown morocco labels, turn-ins gilt-rolled, marbled endpapers and edges. Volume I with frontispiece portrait engraving of H. Davy, a few in-text illustrations. First blank with ink inscription, "John Wolley from his sincere friend R. J. Hargane (sp?). Eton. July 1842." With half-sheet errata bound in before p. 1. â—†Spine and a portion of covers slightly sunned and faded, light wear to joints, foxing to endpapers, but an excellent copy of this memoir of the famed chemist and inventor, little changed since it was presented to naturalist John Wolley (1823-59) at the time he left Eton for Trinity College, Cambridge. .
