New York:: Forest, Fish and Game Commision,, c. 1902.. First printing. Fine condition. . A Fine original chromolithograph printed on heavy coated stock. Quarto (9 x 12.5 Inches). Published as part of the unbound portfolio of prints. This is one of the finest of the late 19th to early 20th century American chromolithographs: a color-printed lithograph in which a separate stone was used for the application of each color, thus requiring meticulous registration to recreate the subtle tones of blended color simulating the iridescence of the fish. This fine chromolithograph was produced from the original watercolors by Sherman Foote Denton (1856-1937), who pioneered the technique for preserving the fish in preparation for depiction by which the specimen retained its vivid and authentic iridescence and coloration. As stated in the Annual Reports of the State of NY Fisheries, Game and Forest Commissions c. 1898-1909: "no colored figures of fishes in existence exceed them for truthfulness or beauty of… Read More

London:: William Heinemann,, 1898.. First printing. Fine. A Fine original color-printed lithograph. Quarto (9.75 x 12.25). Archivally double-matted to 14.25 x 16.5 inches, suitable for framing. William Nicholson (British 1872-1949) gained notoriety as a beloved portrayer of British Victorian culture with his dignified caricatures of both the pillars of society and the lay folk. His woodcut portraits of Queen Victoria, James McNeill Whistler, and Rudyard Kipling, from which this print was inspired, were both traditional yet innovative. Referencing the subculture of the late 19th Century Parisian Cafe society through the poster advertisements, and the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, Nicholson's mid-tonal compositions honored the void as well as the light. His revolutionary technique of carving away wide sections of block introduced a modern perspective to the traditional art of portraiture, caricature and book illustration. Matted in Rag Board

Description:
British Isles :, c. 1820.. Fine condition. A scarce and charming original early nineteenth century watercolor painting on wove paper. (7 x 7.25 inches, 177 x 186 mm.) The painting has been tipped onto ecru wove album paper of the period, as was the custom, yet the watercolors remain vibrant and rich. Although the origin of this lovely painting is unknown, a refined and experienced hand clearly created this detailed and elegant composition. The details are fine; both the tones and shading display the painter's astute understanding of composition and perspective. The artist no doubt was an armchair or "parlor" watercolorist, likely an aristocratic gentlewoman or man who sought inspiration from the vast array of published volumes, complete with engraved plates, of the trades, and costumes of then exotic regions of the globe, thus the inspiration seems apparent. Archivally framed in Ivory rag matting with neo-classical gilt moulding.
