A very nice map, originally appearing in one of the "History Series" By Mary Elise Thalheimer, and early female American historian and hymn writer. John Clark Ridpath (1840-1900) was an American educator, historian and editor. He was a descendant (through his mother) of Samuel Matthews, a colonial governor of Virginia. In 1869, he was elected Professor of English Literature at Asbury College, where he served as faculty member and later vice-president, and was largely the originator of the measures by which that institution was placed under the patronage of Washington C.
