Description:
New York: Balllantine, 1974. Calendar. Very Good/No Jacket. A rare 1975 Edition of the MC. Escher calendar. Those who are familiar with this artist's work will need no further explanation. For those NOT familiar, no explanation is possible (without giving me a headache!). Suffice to say that Escher specialises in the production of complex, apparently impossible, visual conumdrums and makes them seem possible. Twelve of his works are reproduced here in colour and black & white, together of course with the original calendar pages. A fascinating collection to cut out and frame, or keep as a collector's item. Comes in the original cardboard mailing envelope from Ballantine Books (but additionaly protected by me). Page size is 28.5 x 33cm, and all in very good condition. Front cover shows diagonal crease on bottom left corner, else very good.

Description:
London: Headline, 2003. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. In this remarkable new book, the author examines the key period in Hitler's life which transformed him from an aimless drifter and frustrated artist, into a charismatic public speaker and absolute ruler of the most powerful fascist state in European history. This was the two months Hitler spent being treated by Dr Edmund Forster in a military reserve hospital at Pasewalk in 1918. We learn of Hitler's mental issues after suffering a gas attack in the trenches, and why he was treated by a psychiatrist 600 miles away when everyone else caught up in the same attack was cared for only a few miles behind the front line. We are also shown how the methods used by Forster were, unintentionaly, to create a monster who would not only transform the whole of Europe but also turn on the man who had invented him. That Forster was also Jewish is perhaps the ultimate irony in this most fascinating and little known historical episode. Contains 336 pages, 24…

Description:
London: Hamish Hamilton , 1988. Hardcover. Good/very good. A re-examination of the events surrounding the Munich Agreement of 1938. Many historians have seen this as a shameful betrayal of Czechoslovakia, while others argue that by 'sacrificing' the Czechs, Chamberlain bought valuable time for Britain to re-arm. In this volume, the author threads his way through the preceding history of Germany, Czechoslovakia and above all the strained relations between Britain and France in the 1930s. As a result, he finds a disturbing inevitability in the final tragic events. Size, 24 x 15.5cm, 242 pages, 12 pages of b&w photos. Ex-library, front endpaper removed, some library markings. Brown cloth boards in very good pictorial dust jacket. Internally, good: shows some yellowing of page extremities, but otherwise clean and unmarked in excellent bindings.

Description:
London: Andre Deutsch, 1998. Hardcover. Good/Good. Fair/Good Jacket. Examines nine serial sex killers: John Christie, Ian Brady, Myra Hindley, Peter Sutcliffe, Dennis Nilsen, Robert Black, Colin Ireland and Fred and Rose West. In each case, the author examines what is known about his/her childhood and describes how that child was transformed into a murderer. In a thoughtful conclusion, she produces a model for the way in which an unloved and isolated child can morbidly transform a fantasy life linking sex and death into an adult career of appalling brutality. Both disturbing and compelling, this is the first serious attempt to compare and contrast the lives and crimes of British post-war serial killers. Contains 310 pages, 23 x 15cm, plus 16-pages of b&w photos. Ex-library, front endpaper removed, some library markings. Black boards in good illustrated dust jacket. Internally, fair: shows the ocassional stain but generally clean and unmarked in sound bindings.
