Description:
Torpelund pr. Eskebjerg: Chr. Olsen [PN MN. 26-52], 1926. Folio. 3 pp. + 1f. violin part. Light uniform browning; slightly creased. First Edition. Rare (1 copy located outside of Denmark, at NYPL). Christian Olsen was a folklore collector from a well-known and successful Danish family, who had their large farm and estate "Torpelund" near Eskebjerg in Zealand. The polka was apparently taught to Olsen's father by a travelling violinist who had learned it from Bull himself. Famed Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull (1810-1880) was so popular in his day that many dubious publications appeared under his name, but he wrote down little of his own music and published even less. Whether the tune that Olsen recorded has a true connection to Bull is unknown, but highly unlikely.
