Archibald Constable & Co. Westminster, 1897 Superbly bound and signed by Hatchards of Piccadilly in full crushed crimson morocco, spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering, triple inner gilt rules. All edges are gilt with head and tailbands and board edges also gilt ruled. Joseph Chamberlain (8 July 1836 2 July 1914) was a British politician and statesman. Unlike most major politicians of the time, he was a self-made businessman who had not attended university. Born in London, Chamberlain made his career in Birmingham, first as a manufacturer of screws and then as a notable Mayor of the city. During his early adulthood he was a radical Liberal Party member and a campaigner for educational reform. He entered the House of Commons aged almost forty, relatively late in life for a front-rank politician. Rising to power through his influence with the Liberal grassroots organisation, he served as President of the Board of Trade in Gladstone's Second Government (188085). At the time, Chamberlain…
