The edition dated 1814, with 46 pp. in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal appears to be a later printing, in a different setting of type. José Pedro Soares was a teacher of Latin at Ponta Delgada. He was a native of Lisbon, and is said to have died in 1843, having attained more than 80 years. Innocêncio identifies over ten works by him, the present one only in an undated edition of 47 pages. *** Innocêncio V, 92-3. Lisbon, Na Impressão Regia, 1815.. 4°, later boards of glossy black embossed paper, narrow strip of cloth at spine (spine chipped off, joints weak); early blue wrappers bound in. Light foxing on final 2 leaves. Internally fine, overall good to very good condition. Tag (bookseller's?) removed from corner of front pastedown. 48 pp. *** Second edition (?) of a work written in 1772 and presumably published that year, although we have seen no copies of such an edition. Innocêncio noted that it had been plagiarized at least twice, and that copies were rare: "Não será facil encontrar de venda exemplares no mercado, eé de certo muito menos conhecida do que merecia sel-o." In 1772 the Marquês de Pombal (1699-1782) was the most powerful man in Portugal.
