Description:
London: John Long, 1939. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's oatmeal boards with black lettering. FFEP missing. First 50 pages or so of the book are loose. Quite heavy foxing to the page edges. Overall about good. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 7/6 net to the spine (as called for). The good D/W is rubbed to the extremities, frayed at the spine tips and tired in appearance but is mostly all there. Rare. Department Z. This D/W would benefit from a better book.

Description:
London: Cassell, 1937. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Colonial Edition. Publisher's black boards with mauve spine lettering. A near fine copy in a D/W that is VG indeed with a few minor, insignificant chips to the cream portion of the spine (in the top 1/3rd or so) just affecting the final letter of the author's surname. A nice copy of an uncommon title. Scans invited. This copy looks much nicer than it sounds. Chesterton's final collection of detective stories (published after his death in 1936). Of the eight mysteries, seven were first printed in the Storyteller magazine.

1934. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, Limited 1934). First Edition. Sketches by F H Schiff. Full page colour pictorial map, black and white photograph illustrations, black and white and colour sketches throughout, folio (15 x 10 1/2 inches), cloth covered boards with applied photographic illustration and ribbon with title text on front cover. Ellen Catleen was wife of the Dutch ambassador to China in the 1930s. Produced in Art Deco Style with Vignette Drawings by Schiff which perfectly compliment the reproductions of the beautiful gravure images of Peking originally taken with a Rolliflex camera. The book itself is VG indeed although the corners are slightly bumped and there is a small damp patch at the top left hand corner of the back board. In the VERY RARE D/W which matches the pictorial boards. A former owner of this copy had reinforced the edges of the D/W by un-necessarily attaching tape to the top and bottom edges of the D/W. This has now been…

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1936. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. Original blue cloth lettered in black. A VG+ copy in like slightly spine-faded D/W. Signed and dated by the Author on the title page: R Austin Freeman/ 218th May 1936". A card (with the author's address engraved in red thereon and dated 18th May 1936) has been attached to the front free end-paper upon which the Author has written: "Dear Miss McInnes, I have autographed this/ book on the title page & hope this will meet your/ requirements. I also hope that you will like the/ book. with best wishes/ yours sincerely/ R Austin Freeman". I suspect this book may have been a gift from the recipient to another person as there is a further inscription (not in the Author's hand) on the half-title: Aubrey Nicholson from Freda 1936. Increasingly uncommon and rare with these attributes.
