Description:
5th ed., 1798. xxxi, 381 pp. [1 p. Advert]. From the library of Robert Southey, in his patterned cloth binding and with his annotations. The volumes in Southey's 'Cottonian' library were designed by his daughters, with the aid of Sara Coleridge and Dora Wordsworth, who crafted the coverings from discarded dresses. This example has an especially interesting provenance, being the copy later owned by Benjamin Bailey (best known as friend to Keats). Bailey has included a handwritten poetic tribute to Southey composed during his final years of illness. Opposite this page, Bailey describes his acquisition of the book, noting Southey's marginalia. A remarkable survivor from Southey's library at Keswick (part of Lot 2224 from the 1844 sale), with some wear and marking to the cloth; sl. loss to spine and general weakness to the boards; interior shows some evidence of worming, but a notable copy in Southey's distinctive binding.
