Yale University Press, 1993 4to (26.5 cm), VIII, 312 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). "A distinctly modern art world emerged in 18th-century England. The period witnessed the establishment of the first public spaces for the display of art, widespread discussion of artistic issues and commercial patronage of painting and sculpture. In this book, David Solkin discusses these phenomena, showing how developments in painting were related to the rapid growth of commerce and analyzing how the sudden light of public exposure affected pictorial practice and theory." Description:
Yale University Press, 1997 8vo (21 cm), VIII, 320 pp. Laminated wrappers. "The Renaissance was a golden age in the long history of Venetian painting, and the art that came from Venice during that era includes some of the most visually exciting works in the whole of western art. This attractive book - a comprehensive account of painting in Venice from Bellini to Titian to Tintoretto - is an accessible introduction to the paintings of this period. Peter Humfrey surveys the development of a distinctly Venetian artistic tradition from the middle years of the fifteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century. He discusses the work of Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto as well as the paintings of those less well known - such as the three Vivarini, Cima, Carpaccio, Palma Vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Bassano. Humfrey analyses these painters' works in terms of their pictorial style, technique, subject matter, patronage and function. He also sets the art… Read More

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collections, 2009 8vo (25 cm), VIII, 416 pp. Laminated wrappers (minor shelf-wear). "Among the most sumptuous buildings of antiquity were royal palaces. As in the Old World, kings and nobles of ancient Mexico and Peru had luxurious administrative quarters in cities, and exquisite pleasure palaces in the countryside. This volume explores the great houses of the ancient New World, from palaces of the Aztecs and Incas, looted by the Spanish conquistadors, to those lost high in the Andes and deep in the jungle. This volume, the first scholarly compendium of elite residences of the high cultures of the New World, presents definitive descriptions and interpretations by leading scholars in the field. Authoritative yet accessible, this extensively illustrated book will serve as an important resource for anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians of art, architecture, and related disciplines." American Mathematical Society, 2021 8vo (25 cm), V, 102 pp. Laminated wrappers. "Let SpXq be the Schwartz space of compactly supported smooth functions on the p-adic points of a spherical variety X, and let C pXq be the space of Harish-Chandra Schwartz functions. Under assumptions on the spherical variety, which are satisfied when it is symmetric, we prove Paley-Wiener theorems for the two spaces, characterizing them in terms of their spectral transforms. As a corollary, we get relative analogs of the smooth and tempered Bernstein centers -- rings of multipliers for SpXq and C pXq.WhenX “ a reductive group, our theorem for C pXq specializes to the well-known theorem of Harish-Chandra, and our theorem for SpXq corresponds to a first step -- enough to recover the structure of the Bern-stein center -- towards the well-known theorems of Bernstein [Ber] and Heiermann [Hei01]." Description:
Yale University Press, 2006 4to (29.5 cm), XII, 392 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "Celebrated Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) devoted much of his career to the city of Venice. Famous for public buildings he had designed in his native Vicenza and country villas he had built for wealthy patricians there, he arrived in Venice in the mid- 1550s confident of establishing a successful new practice. Yet Palladio's Venetian career never matched his lofty expectations. Failing to achieve the position of state architect or to earn the kinds of commissions to which he was accustomed, he found himself working in a category new to his practice: ecclesiastical architecture. It was his stunning churches, however, including San Giorgio Maggiore and Il Redentore, that established Palladio's lasting renown. In this fascinating and beautifully illustrated book, Tracy E. Cooper organizes Palladio's work in Venice according to different types of patrons. She discusses his… Read More

Description:
Yale University Press, 1998 8vo (24 cm), X, 414 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (paper slightly toned). "Paper Palaces" explores the development of architectural treatises during the Renaissance, tracing the evolution of the genre from its roots in the medieval manuscript tradition to the printed books of the sixteenth century. Vaughan Hart analyzes the works of key figures such as Alberti, Serlio, and Palladio, examining how these authors utilized text, image, and architectural theory to influence the practice of building in Renaissance Europe. Through a close reading of these treatises, Hart demonstrates how they contributed to the emergence of the architect as a professional figure and helped establish architecture as a distinct discipline. "Paper Palaces" represents a significant contribution to the study of architectural history and Renaissance culture.

Description:
London: Thames and Hudson, 1993 4to (28 cm), 224 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). The British Library's Yates-Thompson codex of Dante's "Divine Comedy" was created around 1445 for the King of Naples. Its 61 miniatures of the Paradiso -- the third and the last book of the poem -- are by Sienese artist Giovanni di Paolo. Not only they are outstanding works of art, but they also represent how the poem would have been read in the middle of 14th century. Each miniature is exquisitely reproduced in color for the first time. A substantial introduction by Sir John Pope-Hennessy surveys contemporary illustration of Dante and discusses Giovanni di Paolo's work on the codex in the context of his artistic career. The full text of Paradiso provided in the translation by Charles Singleton.
