Description:
London. Chapman and Hall. 1854. First Edition. 8vo. (7 ½ x 5 ½). viii, [1], 155 pp. Illustrated frontispiece showing 'This Noble River'. With seven black and white plates in the text. Text vignettes. Includes an interesting discussion on rods, lines, and the making of artificial flies; although the methods described for making flies are somewhat arcane, they are still relevant to those folks with an interest in mid-nineteenth century fly dressing techniques. The book is bound in the original dark blue blind-stamped cloth with gilt titles on the spine and a gilt mayfly on the front cover. Professionally rebacked many years ago, two bookplates, one angling, the other belonging to Lionel Cresswell, the nineteenth century publisher of the Stemmata Alstoniana. Very good. .

New York. Crown Publishers, Inc. 1974. Octavo (8 x 6). 248 pp. plus 1 page biography of Haig-Brown. Inscribed and signed by Roderick Haig-Brown to David Denbigh. Mr. Denbigh was the art director and producer for the extravagant salmon portfolio presented to governments officials attending the Third U. N. This copy of Return to the River was inscribed by Haig-Brown to David Denbigh when he and other portfolio participants, including Bill Reid, Haida artist, and Robert R. Reid, typographer for the portfolio, visited with him at his home, Above Tide, in early 1974 in an effort to convince Haig-Brown to write the book for the portfolio, titled "The Salmon."
