Stirling: Printed by W. Macnie, 1826. Removed from a bound volume with inner edges worn, a relatively weak impression of the woodcut, but otherwise a nice copy. Very good.. A charming provincial chapbook from local Stirling chapbook printer William Macnie. A short collection of ballads. With what appears to be a recycled or otherwise irrelevant woodcut featuring the letter "D". Macnie apparently produced around 110 chapbooks under his own imprint during his ownership of the firm previously owned by the Randalls. 12mo. 8pp. Atkinson, Street Literature of the Long Nineteenth Century: Producers, Sellers, Consumers, pg. 170; SBTI.

London: Ernest Nister, 1899. Fair only with contents separated from stapled wrapper, dustjacket with staining, closed tear, and significant separation, and 1899 gift inscription.. A scarce 8-page printing on cardstock of Massachusetts author Sophia P. Snow's poem which was first published in 1884, tells the story of two young children on Christmas Eve who had lost their mother and whose father had lost Christmas in his heart, and which features Santa Claus. Of note, this volume contains an early example of a dustjacket.

Edinburgh: Practical Training School of Cookery and Housekeeping, 1903. In publisher's gilt green cloth, price partially excised from front board and crossed out on title page, some pages grubby, binding beginning to loosen, but otherwise very good.. A delightful turn-of-the-twentieth-century volume, which in addition to dozens of recipes, provides a price list of lessons Griggs taught, including cookery, dressmaking, and laundry work, along with several pages of ads including for a typewriter and Cadbury. The recipes include British pub food staples like rarebit but also a fare number (pun intended) of French recipes. Griggs was an owner of the Practical Training School of Cookery and Housekeeping, on 137 George Street, Edinburgh. Oblong 8vo. [4], 119pp., [5, ads]. Scarce with Worldcat locating no physical copies. Boston: For the Author, 1813. Good in worn quarter leather, paper loss exposing scaleboard, endpapers clipped and with owner inscriptions, some foxing scattered throughout.. The 44th edition of an immensely popular children's textbook, this copy retains its charming, if worn, paper over scaleboard (wood) binding. 12mo. iv, 228pp. Shaw, Early American Imprints, Series 2, no. 27946. London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1831. New edition [second edition]. About very good in publisher's grayish boards with paper spine labels, with some spotting and staining particularly to vol. II, tear to the foot of vol. I spine, boards & spines rubbed particularly to head & foot, contents clean.. [Cruikshank, George, ill.].. Intended for children and originally composed for the author's family, this three-volume work about science was first published in 1827. Originally published anonymously, in later editions authorship was credited to Paris. Dedicated to the writer Maria Edgeworth, it aims "to blend amusement with instruction", which Paris states Edgeworth has "satisfactorily demonstrated" in her own novels. Clearly a cheaply produced production with differing paper sizes and some errors to the printing (which are not present in the NLS copy), stab holes present, disbound from a larger volume, with some staining throughout, otherwise very good.. Care to our coffin adds a nail no doubt, while every laugh so merry draws one out." A pleasant chapbook with a number of humorous, and somewhat crude, repartees, each taking up about half a page each. 16mo. [2], [3]-24pp. Dated per NLS. Scarce. "37" printed at foot of title.

Edinburgh: Printed for J. Dick, 1814. Very good in modern quarter leather. Prior owner bookplate to pastedown, contemporary owner name on title page, edges uncut/torn but in a few places too much so but not affecting text.. Scarce Edinburgh printing of Thomson's perennial work. The engraved frontispiece and engraved title must have been created hastily as both Thomson's and Johnson's names are spelled incorrectly - "The seasons, by James Thompson [sic] With the Life of the Author by Dr. Samuel Johnston [sic]." 12mo. [7], xxiii, 298pp. Worldcat locates 3 copies as of August 2020.

[London], 1793. Very good with wear to edges, a few small tears, a small hole affecting one leaf, page toning, and pencil notations in several hands.. An offprint of an article by the antiquary Rev. Samuel Denne which appeared in Archaeologia, v11 (1792): 375-396. While a niche essay, on a niche topic, Charles Clarke's original essay and this response form part of the "first critical examination of the liturgical function and development of sedilia, and indeed the coining of their very name" and are thus of import in such studies. Cameron, Sedelia in Medieval England (Doctoral Thesis, University of London, 2015). 4to. 22pp. + several additional later blank leaves. ESTC N62533. A scarce work with two copies located on Worldcat and none at auction per RBH as of October 2020. This copy bound in half leather for collector and scholar of Kent, Robert Hovenden, with his bookplate tipped in.

A good plus copy with some wear to spine and slight loss at top of spine, over opened with some separation, contents generally clean and bright with only a touch of scattered foxing.. First edition with all first issue plates (and the only issue which contains Ruskin's own etched plates) in publisher's highly distinct embossed brown cloth (which Wise calls "deep claret colour"). A landmark text in the Gothic Revival. Imperial 8vo. viii, [1, errata slip], [4] 205pp., [1], [16pp., adverts + advert slip for the Stones of Venice dated 1849]. Wise 4. Scarce in the cloth and with the adverts, errata, and Stones of Venice slip all present.

About very good in contemporary half red roan with spine gilt over marbled boards, wear to edges and corners with some loss, wear to spines, scattered foxing.. Triple decker first edition in book form of the romance set in Ireland with a strong female lead by the popular Victorian author who sunk into obscurity shortly after his death in 1898. 8vo. 3 vols. [8], 271pp.; [6], 296pp.; [6], 293pp.; bound with half titles but without preceding blanks and catalogue. Wolff 508. Uncommon in commerce as a triple decker.

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1931. Very good with some light wear and pencil ticks and crosses next to contents page entries.. From the library of Richard Adams, with his ownership signature on the the flyleaf. Also includes Adam's NHS receipt for dental treatment, presumably which he used as a bookmark for this book.

Philadelphia: George W. Childs, 1862. Very good with wear to corners and spine and hindges starting with some cocking, in publisher's dark green blind stamped cloth, internally clean.. First edition and apparently only edition. Important account of the Army of the Potomac, in which Civil War Books states "Cook, a prolific writer, was a reporter for the Philadelphia Press during McClellan's spring, 1862 campaign; his account is excellent as a commentary on the country and its inhabitants." Small 8vo. viii, 7-358pp.

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1936. First American edition. A good copy with wear to edges and corners, some writing in the content perhaps by Hewitt, and Dartmouth discard stamp (where Hewitt's papers were donated after his death).. Signed and inscribed by Harry Wagstaff Gribble, the prominent playwright, director, actor, and screenwriter, to Alan Hewitt, the American film, television and stage actor, in 1936 when Hewitt appeared on Broadway for the first time under Gribble's direction of the presentation of The Taming of the Shrew. An interesting copy with a theater association.

Boston: Roger G. Badger, 1916. First Edition. Very good in original boards with wear at the extremities.. H.L. Mencken's copy with his bookplate. Also with the ownership stamp and signature of The Vagabond Theatre, whose first play was an original submitted by Mencken.

Very good in publisher's maroon buckram with paper label, unopened, minor chipping of the label, lightly faded boards, foxing to front flyleaf, contemporary ownership signature and plate, and dust to edges, but still a nice copy.. First Edition. Large paper issue which is number 257 of 275 on hand-made paper. None of Scott, Walsdorf, or Buxton Forman indicate whether the large copy or trade take precedence, but nevertheless, the large paper issue is more desirable. Buxton Forman states "[t]his remarkable work of true collaboration, in which both Morris and Mr. Bax went over every sentence, was now dug out of The Commonweal, revised, and printed . . ." Sm 4to. New York: John Wiley, 1860. Chipping, substantial dampstaining throughout, some loss to spine. A good copy.. Presentation copy. Secretarial signature reads "Chas. Follen Palfrey, with the compliments of the author." This particular copy is mentioned in Palfrey's biography in the Association of the Graduates of the United States Military Academy Annual Report 1921.

London: Printed at Strawberry-Hill, 1758. Very good with scattered minor spotting, contemporary calf, rebacked, minor bumping to corners and extremities.. First edition from the famed press set up at Strawberry Hill, Horace Walpole's London villa. According to Walpole's introductory advertisement, "Lord Whitworth's little treatise will throw considerable lights upon the formation of the Muscovite power, and upon the plans of the extraordinary genius, Peter the Great." This work was often used as evidence of the state of contemporary Russia and was "essentially an appraisal of Russia's growing military, particularly naval, strength, [and] a positive assessment of Peter [the Great]" Cross, Peter the Great through British Eyes (2000, pgs. 45, 76). 8vo. xxiv, 158pp., [1].
