Description:
[England]: n.p., 1916. Very good.. First edition of this fascinating piece of World War I ephemera, celebrating the downing of four zeppelins in a parody of the "Ten Little" rhyme. A large amount of cultural significance is packed into this single sheet, both explicitly and more subtly. On the surface, THE SAD TALE OF THE ZEPPELINS is an interesting illustration of British national pride and anti-German sentiment at the midway point of WWI. It was printed to commemorate the downing of four German zeppelins over England in September and October of 1916: one in Cuffley, Hertfordshire (the first zeppelin downed on British soil), two in Essex, and one more in Potters Bar, near London. Structurally, the rhyme is a parody of or reference to the "Ten Little" counting poem. The source poem - based on a 19th-century minstrel song which counted racist terms for Black people or Native Americans, depending on the version - appeared in a variety of media. The format of the "Ten Little" poem, and the implied…

Description:
London: Collins, 1944. Very good.. First edition of this scarce British children's story on the Struwwelpeter model, issued during World War II with an implicit suggestion of civic as well as personal virtue: good boys tolerate deprivation without complaint. Moral tale whose anti-greed lesson presumably had a particular edge in the midst of wartime rationing. The titular Greedy Boy risks life and limb to climb up to the "bottle of sweets"; this being 20th-century England and not 19th-century Germany, his transgressions and subsequent fall from a great height earn him only pain and suffering, not death. "His mouth watered...His fingers itched..." for the barley sugars; unspoken but understood is the fact that he cannot have them: sweet rationing was introduced in 1942 and not fully lifted until well after the war's end. A rare early work by the author of the better-known THE WITCH-CHILD; OCLC locates just three holdings of this title, with only one in the US. 9'' x 6''. Original quarter red cloth…

Description:
New York: Gotham Book Mart & Gallery, Inc, 1971. Near fine.. Signed limited first edition thus, an out of sequence copy not signed or numbered on the limitation page, but instead signed by Gorey on the title page. This poem was first composed in 1872 as "Le Hareng saur," an unusual example of French nonsense verse - a genre much more popular in England than in France. As Scott Bates notes, "if there is any one French poem that appears to fit the criteria of childishness, gratuitousness, and unconscious revolt characteristic of true nonsense, it is Charles Cros's 'Le Hareng saur." 5.25'' x 6''. Original green pictorial wrappers. Illustrated by Gorey in black and white. Translated from the French by Alphonse Allais. [44] pages. Signed by Gorey on the title page, crossing out his name. Touch of the sunning that often affects this title, tiny bump to corner.
