Porter was a Scottish artist, author, diplomat and traveller, appointed historical painter to Tsar Alexander I of Russia in 1804. Complications with the courtship to Princess Mary von Schenbastoff necessitated his departure to Finland and Sweden in 1806. He was able to return in 1811 to marry his Princess Mary. Abbey travel 13.
