Description:
Washington, 1850. 32pp. Modern blue paper wrappers. Bookplate inside front cover. Light foxing and toning. About very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth folder. First official government report on the discovery of gold in California. Thomas Butler King (1800-1864) was a Georgia politician who served in the U.S. Congress. He expected but failed to receive an appointment as Secretary of the Navy under Zachary Taylor's administration, and was instead appointed Taylor's special agent to California. This report gives details of his journey across the Isthmus of Panama to California, and, more importantly, the situation of the gold fields. HOWES K153. KURUTZ 377a. COWAN, p.330.

Description:
London: W. Reeve, 1749. [2],89pp. 12mo. Modern marbled wrappers. Titlepage reinforced along gutter, minute foxing, occasional pencil sidelining. Very good. An anonymous survey of the history of Tobago, written expressly to defend British claims to the colony. Much attention is paid to the prolonged territorial conflicts between the British, French, and Dutch in the West Indies. The French, as expected, are characterized as duplicitous in their diplomatic dealings with Britain over the islands. Non-political subjects include a brief description of the native people and a précis of Tobago's geographical relationship to nearby islands. While both EUROPEAN AMERICANA and the BEINECKE LESSER ANTILLES COLLECTION catalogue call for a map, Sabin lists one only for the second edition. There is no map with the present copy. A lively history of the island. Scarce. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 749/261. SABIN 94166. BEINECKE LESSER ANTILLES COLLECTION 205. HANSON 6294. GOLDSMITHS 8420. JCB (I)3:918. CUNDALL (WEST INDIES)…

Description:
Pari, 1766. 51pp. Large folio. Stitched. Minor soiling and foxing. Very good. Defense of the Comte de Lally for his actions in India during the Seven Years' War. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally, head of the French expedition to India, reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable, he was extremely unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras and beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash, and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British, he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence, published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding (a publisher's note is dated April 14, and Lally was executed May 6)

Description:
Philadelphia: Joseph Crukshank, 1785.. [1],90pp. Contemporary American wallet-style binding of reverse calf, tooled in blind. Much of the spine is perished, wallet flap detached but present, with attached leather tie. A few old stains in the upper portion of the beginning text, else quite clean internally. Contemporary ownership signature on titlepage, one instance of a contemporary manuscript correction in text. Bookplate of Frank Streeter on front pastedown. Very good. In a folding cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. The rare first edition of this early American surveying guide, of practical use for navigators as well. The entire text is comprised of intricately calculated tables giving departure and latitude coordinates. Evans and Rink attribute later editions to John Robertson. This first edition is not listed separately in Evans, but is a part of his record for Robert Gipson's A TREATISE OF PRACTICAL SURVEYING..., with which it was issued in 1785. Rink, however, correctly notes that Robertson's…

[Strassburg: Johann Schott, March 12, 1513].. Woodblock map on two joined sheets. Overall joined sheet size: 18 1/4 x 20 3/4 inches. Evidence of previous mounting on outer margins (not touching text), light even tanning. Diagonal tear in lower left corner, with loss of paper (not affecting text). Very good. An excellent copy of the earliest obtainable printed map focusing on the western hemisphere. It is preceded only by Peter Martyr's map of the Spanish Main (Seville, 1511), and Johannes Stobnicza's 1512 map. This was the most important map featured in Johann Schott's edition of Claudius Ptolemy's GEOGRAPHIE OPUS NOVISSIMA TRADUCTIONE E GRECORUM ARCHETYPIS CASTIGATISSIME PRESSUM, the first modern atlas. This map depicts the eastern coast of North and South America in a continuous line from the northern latitude of 55° to Rio de Cananor at the southern latitude of 35° (approximately the Rio de la Plata), with about sixty places named. The notably blank interior of the continent is appropriately…

Leipzi, 1858. [28],494,[2]pp. plus sixteen plates (seven in color, six tinted, and three in black and white) and folding map. Half title. Large, thick quarto. Original gilt-stamped cloth, expertly rebacked, edges neatly refurbished. Some scattered foxing, at times rather heavy, else just about very good. The most important work of this notable German artist and topographer, who accompanied several of the leading western surveys of the 1850s. This book describes his experiences with the Pacific Railroad survey under Lieut. Amiel Whipple, investigating a potential route along the 35th parallel in 1853, which took the party across northern New Mexico and Arizona. The work is notable for its plates of the Pueblo Indians and Möllhausen's account of them. "...In addition to the account in journal form of his experiences as topographer of Whipple's surveying expedition in 1853, there is an account of his experiences in the West in 1851 on a trip from St. Louis to Laramie with Prince Paul of Wurttemberg" -…

Description:
[Japan, ca. 1853].. [14]pp., including three double-page woodblock illustrations. Gathered signatures, stitched, as issued. Mild wear. Near fine. Rare kawaraban newsbook announcing the arrival of Commodore Perry and the Black Ships to Japan in 1853. The work includes three double-page illustrations: a dominating portrait of Perry's flagship; Perry and a contingent of marines marching in procession to a meeting with local dignitaries at Kurihama, with two cabin boys carrying boxes, presumably official gifts or President Fillmore's letter requesting harmonious commerce; and a map of Edo Bay where the Black Ships entered. Listings of the Samurai and Daimyo Feudal Lords entrusted with the protection of Japan from foreign invasion are found on the final leaves. Such kawaraban - news sheets, broadsides or small periodicals - provided the most immediate contemporary news of events in Japan, including Commodore Perry's momentous first visit.

Original printed blue wrappers, stapled. Wrappers faded, significant edge wear, small chips to spine. Interior slightly tanned but otherwise clean. Good plus. A very scarce illustrated 1950s traffic guide from the Fort Worth area. Automobile fatalities were on the rise in the period, and this manual lays out the importance of learning the rules of the road in no uncertain terms: "A more pitiful sight does not exist than that of the broken body of a child lying in the road, stricken down while riding a bicycle or playing in the street...remember, this could be YOUR child." Otherwise, the manual prints general advice, the rules for right of way and hand signaling (with illustrations), and prints the text of relevant laws.
