Description:
From the Editor's Preface: "Through almost the whole of their history Americans have shown a deep distrust of the military man. The constitutional structure of the United States was explicit in subordinating military to civilian authority, and deeply rooted, popular suspicions have resisted the creation of a military caste with special privileges.""Ulysses S. Grant was a man superbly fitted by character and background for his role as military leader. He moved unsteadily into the nation's highest office in the period of confusion and great change after the Civil War. But as a civilian the very qualities that made him a great soldier proved a liability."Very Good condition. Blue cloth cover with "The Library of American Biography" graphic impression on front. Gold gilt text and design on spine has faded. Very light soiling/rubbing - barely noticeable. Bottom front corner has some wear. Glue discoloration on end papers. Previous owner's name and date in ink on end paper. Otherwise text is clean and…

Description:
From inside page titled "Harriet Beecher Stowe. - 1812-1898." : "Uncle Tom's Cabin may not have been the creation of a literary art, but it is so earnestly written, and excites so deep an interest in suffering, misfortune and injustice, that readers, as a rule, do not so much as think of the style in the living picture, - and yet is is 'style that lives'."Fair condition; however the first 8 pages of the Introduction are missing, along with the Title Page. The cover is a really nice smooth-feeling green cloth with a flower design impressed in the cover that has ivory and maroon accents. The title is also pressed into the cover along with a border. The spine also has the title and colored flowers design impressed. The top and bottom of the spine show much wear. There is some wear to the edges and corners. The end papers have a delicate green design with the Henry Altemus initials in the center. The front also has a previous owner's name in ink. And, there is another name in the back. Both front and…

This dictionary includes over 500 photos, maps and drawings. Condition: Fair. Green cloth covers show above average wear; plus, one side of spine has masking tape to hold it together. Binding intact. It appears that page edges had a green tint that now shows wear, soiling, and some stains. Prior owner's name and address written in ink on inside of both front and back covers. Title page has a small chip and a small stain, I noted two pages with some light pink highlights, but a quick flip through pages shows that most are unmarked. This does not mean that we must be the same in belief, thought, and expression, for there is unity in diversity."Book - Fine condition. Description:
From back cover: The Unwinding tells the story of the past three decades by journeying through the lives of several Americans, including a son of tobacco farmers who becomes an evangelist for a new economy in the rural South, a factory worker in the Rust Belt trying to survive the collapse of her city, a Washington insider oscillating between political idealism and the lure of organized money, and a Silicon Valley billionaire who arrives at a radical vision of the future. Packer interweaves these stories with sketches of public figures, from Newt Gingrich to Jay-Z, and collages made from newspaper headlines, advertising slogans, and song lyrics." "[Packer is] among the best nonfiction writers in America...[He] weaves an unforgettable tapestry...In its sensibility, The Unwinding is closer to a novel than a work of nonfiction. It is all the more powerful for it." - Edward Luce, Financial Times New book in new condition. Clean. Tight. No flaws. First Paperback Edition. This book has been stored in a…

Description:
From back cover: "A Profound and timely examination of the moral underpinnings of the war between the states.""The Civil War was not only a war of armies but also a war of ideas, in which Union and Confederacy alike each identified itself as a moral nation with God on its side."
This book measures the gap between those claims and draws on a wealth of contemporary documents. Stout explores the lethal mix of propaganda and ideology that came to justify slaughter on and off the battlefield.
Book - Good condition. I would have called this a "very good" but the back cover has rubbing and bumping including a couple small gouges. There is also some corner wear and there is a red remainder mark on the bottom. Text is clean and binding is very good. The spine is not cracked.
