Description:
Color illus. throughout. 220 unnumbered pages. Oblong 4to (222 x 305 mm.), orig. cloth covered boards, title on spine & upper cover. Brooklyn, NY: Trying to Press, 2016. An uncommon artist's book based on Finch's 2015 Marfa Contemporary exhibition of the same name; printed in an edition of 500, and signed by the artist in orange pencil on the first blank leaf. Referring to Leopold Bloom's journey around Dublin, Spencer Finch recounts his peregrinations in New York City on 19 September 2014 through a selection of ca. 1400 Pantone color swatches. Each swatch, with adjacent text revealing what is evoked, conveys sights as mundane as gravestones, subways, books, food, trash cans, buildings, traffic cones, clothing, trees, etc., etc., to the sublime, like the artworks of Albers, Rembrandt, and Veronese. As new. Designed by the artist Ofer Wolberger.

57 double-page & two single-page woodcuts. 24; 20; 20 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers. Osaka: Shibukawa Seiemon; Edo: Nishimura Genroku, 1749. First edition, published one year after the artist's death. Tachibana (1679-1748), "was the most prolific book-illustrator working in the Kanō tradition in the early eighteenth century...One book stands apart for quite other reasons from the rest designed by Morikuni: the Umpitsu Soga, a book of 1749 aiming to deal with the technique of Sō ('cursive' or 'coarse' brushwork), and introducing, if not for the first time, then for the first time on such a systematic scale, new methods in preparing woodblocks to convey tonal effects of ink-painting, not by black outlines or by lines in white reserve, but by roughening the surface of the wood to produce a scumbling, almost mezzotint-like effect, and by 'lowering' certain areas, which then printed more faintly than the remainder of the… Read More

Description:
One folding printed table. 1 p.l., 46 pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, orig. semi-stiff drab boards (extremities a bit rubbed). Leipzig: C.T. Rabenhorst, 1796.
A remarkable discovery: this is essentially a workbook of the young and precocious Carl Friedrich Gauss, signed and dated by him "C. F. Gauss Sept. 7, 1796" on the inner front cover, at which time he was a 19-year old student in Göttingen. Gauss has not only studied the text carefully, making several corrections to the text, but has also made use of two blank pages at the end to carry out exercises (described in detail below). Mathematical manuscripts of Gauss are of the greatest rarity on the market, especially from his early formative years.
Moritz von Prasse (1769-1814), was the son of Johann Moritz Prasse, who worked as a mediator in the Seven Years' War at the Court of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg (and according to some sources may have been her lover). Description:
[Klein-Schwechat: 1881]. An elaborate album of photographs of drawings of the celebrated brewery at Klein-Schwechat, founded in 1632, and today one of the leading breweries of Austria, producing a lager, a light smooth premium beer called Hopfenperle, and a super-premium called Steffl. The album was prepared for the renowned Viennese brewer August Deiglmayer (1827-83), who was at that time, managing director of the brewery and one of the great innovators of 19th century brewing. Deiglmayer spent much of his professional career at the Klein-Schwechat brewery. The drawings were executed at the request of Georg Wieninger (1832-87), scion of the Schärding family of brewers. Reproduced here in photographs, the drawings depict a number of the imperial-style buildings of the brewery, set around a series of courtyards, which today still more resembles a grand country estate more than a brewery. The first plate consists of a calligraphic title "Erinnerung an Klein-Schwechat" in a hop-vine… Read More

Description:
[100] leaves of different stocks & colors. Large 4to (292 x 210 mm.), orig. stamped semi-stiff gray covers, glued spine. N.p.: [1979]. A wonderful book that records its own creation over the course of nearly two months. The Schmidt-Heins twins frequently invoke time as a component of their books; this example by Barbara is composed of printed leaves with "Zeit" in red at the top and the following text below: "Jahrthausend / Jahrhundert / Jahrzehnt / Jahr / Monat / Woche / Tag / Stunde / Minute / Sekunde." Whenever Schmidt-Heins worked on this book, she filled in the aforementioned information by pencil. Thick paper sheets of various colors are interspersed throughout. In excellent condition. Signed on the inside of the lower cover.

Description:
8vo (212 x 151 mm.), orig. semi-stiff boards (stained), orig. gray tape over spine. N.p.: "Okt. 1977." One of the Schmidt-Heins twins' archetypal bookworks, in a characteristically modest binding holding 50 folding leaves with an identical motif applied. In this case, on the lower inner corners of the rectos, a diagonal line has been drawn with a thick purple pencil; the versos bear cut-out brown triangles that are precisely placed to mirror the recto lines. The glue employed, likely casein-based, has seeped through the leaves and covers. "The decision to break away from the individual exclusive sheet, instead: summation as principle. 100 sheets bound into a book also conceived as volume and weight. The resultant change of attitude determines how and with what the sheets are to be processed: search for methods, laying the framework of action. In each case the 100 sheets are to be subjected to the same process. The claim of the single sheet is relativized by hundredfold repetition. Result:… Read More

Description:
Oblong 4to (183 x 283 mm.), orig. semi-stiff boards (sunned), orig. cloth tape over spine, glue- & paint-bound. N.p.: "Frühjahr '72." A beguiling example of Barbara Schmidt-Heins's bookmaking, this book consists of bound thin paper bags that have been meticulously sliced in half. In the gutter, the ends of the bags are covered in white, gray, and red paints. In fine condition. Signed and dated on the inside of the lower cover. ❧ For other examples of the twins' bookworks from this period see Barbara Schmidt-Heins & Gabriele Schmidt-Heins, eds., Buchwerke: Original-Bücher 1972 bis 1976 (Kunstraum München: 1976).
