Oak Knoll Press, New Castle / British Library, London, first edition, 2004. Cloth, 4to,. xxiv, 266 pp, 8 pp of colour plates, numerous ills. From the blurb: "As a typographer, publisher, and wood engraver Charles Ricketts (1866-1931) was a versatile and innovative practitioner who exerted a powerful influence on the development of modern book design. The Vale Press is the most extensive account to date of his quest to become "a publisher in earnest"." "Beginning with Ricketts's work as "a designer of books and bindings" for Oscar Wilde, the story of the Vale Press reveals for the first time the nature of Ricketts's collaboration with the master printer Charles McCall of the Ballantyne Press and the degree to which Ricketts's success, both artistic and commercial, depended upon the transformation of his redundant skill as a wood engraver into a positive medium of artistic expression." "This work offers a historic window into the world of…

Christie, Manson & Woods, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 28th and 29th October 1987. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 26 cm,. 151 pp, ills (some colour). 483 lots. From the introduction: "John Arlotts fame, particularly in the world of Cricket and Wine, as expert, correspondent, writer and broadcaster, needs no explanation, it is legendary. But perhaps one of his lesser known achievements has been to create, during the last 40 years, probably the most extensive recorded collection of books with aquatint illustrations. Unlike Major Abbey he did not venture into the realm of lithography, it was the aquatint and its employment in book illustration, so brilliantly used in England between the years 1775 and 1830, which intrigued him. The following 188 lots (over 600 volumes) comprise his diverse and well preserved collection. In his own words when I decided to winter abroad I feared for the safety of this particular collection and sent it to auction. Very Good.

[4], 391 pp. 3960 lots of books and 1588 lots of furniture, paintings, drawings and other items. The full catalogue of the 37 days' sales, arranged in chronological order, and with the 20 days of book sales priced in manuscript. The sale was initiated by John Farquhar, (1751-1826), a rich gunpowder manufacturer, who had bought Fonthill Abbey and most of its contents from the writer and collector William Beckford (1759-1844), 'Englands wealthiest son,' in 1822. Beckford had been forced to sell after his finances collapsed from his extravagance, a loss of value in his West Indian property, and miscellaneous lawsuits. His financial difficulties did not deter him from buying considerable parts of his property back at the 1823 sale and continuing to collect.
