1818. Colour-printed stipple engraving. 210mm by 130mm (sheet). From Francois Pierre Chaumeton's 'Flore Medicale' which portrayed a variety of flowers, trees and herbs which could be used for treating illnesses. The engravings were produced during the great period of French colour printing using the stipple-engraving process pioneered by the great botanical artist Pierre-Jospeh Redoute. The artist is the celebrated Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840), pupil of Redoute. He is considered one of the greatest floral and botanical illustrators during the Napoleonic Era and afterwards.

From 1844-1848 he lived and worked in Tasmania. A number of his works were used for engravings in Edwin Carton Booth's 'Australia'. From 'Australia' by Edwin Carton Booth. 1880. Chromolithograph. 380mm by 260mm (sheet). Vanity Fair medical portrait of Mr Erasmus Wilson MRCS. He was a specialist in the diseases of the skin. In 1869 he founded the chair and museum of dermatology in the Royal College of Surgeons, of which he was chosen president in 1881, In 1878 he earned the thanks of the nation by defraying the expense of bringing Cleopatra's Needle from Alexandria to London, where it was erected on the Thames Embankment. The British Government had not thought it worth the expense of transportation. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1881.Accompanied by a photocopy of the descriptive text.

1905. Chromolithograph. 390mm by 270mm (sheet). Popular Astronomy' Vanity Fair portrait of Irish astronomer Sir Robert Stawell Ball (1840-1913). In 1867 he became Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Royal College of Science in Dublin. In 1874 Ball was appointed Royal Astronomer of Ireland and Andrews Professor of Astronomy in the University of Dublin at Dunsink Observatory. In 1892 he was appointed Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge University at the same time becoming director of the Cambridge Observatory.

Worked in the London Stock Exchange for many years. Did much to improve hospital terms and facilities. Accompanied by original descriptive text.

He was known as the Duke of Edinburgh from 1866 until he succeeded his paternal uncle Ernest II as the reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the German Empire.In 1867 as Captain of HMS Galatea he visited Australia where an assasination attempt was made on his life by Henry James O'Farrell.In 1873 Ward (1851 - 1922) was recruited by the editor of Vanity Fair to replace Carlo Pellegrini (Ape).

1908. Hentschel-Colourtype. 395mm by 260mm (sheet). Peace and War' Vanity Fair portrait of Alfred Arthur Greenwood Hales (1860-1936), who was an Australian novelist and war correspondent. When the South African war broke out became a war correspondent for the London Daily News. For a time he wrote critically of the way in which the British were conducting their operations, but was wounded and made a prisoner by the Boers, and was not released until the end of the war. Hales wrote a book on his experiences, Campaign Pictures of War in South Africa, (1900).

1874. Chromolithograph. 380mm by 260mm (sheet). 'Books'. Sir Antonio Panizzi (1797-1879), better known as Anthony Panizzi, was a naturalized British librarian of Italian birth. Panizzi held posts at the British Museum Library, first Assistant Librarian (1831-37), then Keeper of Printed Books (1837-56) and finally Principal Librarian (1856-66). For his services as a librarian, in 1869 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. The British Museum library was, in fact, the national library of the United Kingdom in all but name; during Panizzi's tenure as Keeper of Printed Books its holdings increased from 235,000 to 540,000 volumes, making it the largest library in the world at the time. Its famous circular Reading Room was designed and built by architect Sydney Smirke from a sketch drawn by Panizzi. Accompanied by original descriptive text. One small mark in the image.

1877. Chromolithograph. 380mm by 265mm (sheet). Sensational Art' . Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was born in Strasbourg in 1832. He became a book illustrator in Paris and his commissions included work by Rabelais, Balzac and Dante. In 1853 he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This was followed by other work for British publishers including a new illustrated English Bible.
